I have been working with my Digital Rebel (I love it!) for a few weeks now and I shoot mostly in Av mode. I have set the AF-Points so that I'm only using the centre point (or another single point if I'm consistently shooting the same subject from the same viewpoint).

I was wondering, do you find that the 7-point AF is friendly (accurate and quick)? I'm worried that it will take longer to decide what my subject is and it may focus on the wrong thing (I am taking mostly street photos of people).

Also, one more question: Do you have all the paramater settings (contrast, sharpness) defaulted to 0? I would like to begin shooting this way so that I have a better canvas to work with when I get to Photoshop...does this make sense?

I too have been using the center focus point , and then reposition the subject in the frame where I want it/them. I find when I use all the points I never get what I want in focus. I would like to know what to do with all of them too since they are there I assume that there is right place and time to use them all. Maybe someone can explain that part. I don't change the camera settings either, again it might be a good idea, but I try to change things later in PS, but that is probably wrong too

These are simple questions...can anybody else take a moment to let us know their settings/preferences?

Thanks.

I use the center focus point most of the time as well. I might be missing something - probably am missing something but I too would like to know how to make optimal use of the AF points.

I use the centre AF point.

I usually just use all of them, which means whatever is closest is in focus. This is normally what I want, but if not, I change to the middle point.

So would it be safe to say using all the focus points allows you to position the subject first and snap the picture instead of using one, holding focus and taking picture after repositioning ?

That would be right, yes... unless there is an object nearer to the camera (on a focus point) than the actual thing you want in focus. If that's the case then it will focus on that near object instead.
