Hi all!
I am really excited about the Night Shot II challenge but I'm also a little nervous about going out at night to shoot. My husband would be willing to go with me but then who will take care of the kiddo?!? Any SC folks wanna get together for some after dark photography?

Besides teaming up with a buddy, what other safety tips do ya'll have to share?

Where you from? I'd go with ya if you're close. As far as safety tips, stay outa the bad part of town, stay where it's lit, and a good solid tripod makes a nice club when needed!

...and wear white or reflective gear. :)

Carry a gun, or if you're opposed to guns...get some pepper spray, or a tazer, stun gun, etc.

Or just play safe and take a day shot, and then photoshop the brightness way down... :)

The challenge doesn't say anything about having to be outdoors ...

i carry my tripod like a club and I make sure people can see I have it. I get some odd looks and some people move out of my way. Also I put on my "physco face", that helps a bit also.

Then when I set up the tripod I walk around a bit to check out my surroundings before I get locked to the camera, then I keep checking and move often so i can continue to scan my surroundings.

I think the best advice is travel with more than one of you, im so glad to be a male and live in a safe country, my thought are with you for this challenge please take care. Sprays are good but please take friend with you or go as a group if possible.

It really depends on the neighborhood in which you live. I live in the Bronx, NY, and there is no way in hell I am going out after dark with $1500 of equipment. If I shoot, they shoot.

Prepare to go for your night outdoor shots when the sun has gone done but while there still a little bit of light on the sky. In my area about 7:30 at night. Still early enough so that the thugs are not out yet. City skycrapers will have their lights on and will glow against the still-not-so-dark sky.

Move into the country? Or another country? :-).

OK, not helpful.. I feel a little bit happier knowing that I can walk down the main street in the nearest town at midnight with the biggest danger being that I might stub my toe on something!

I'm not a member, so I'm not shooting in this one, but it would sound like the large city dwellers need to take care out there!

Go in a group, more than two, as many as you can get... Take along some friends who don't have cameras.. Don't skulk around in dark corners, if you're in a public place make a bit of noise, talk amongst yourselves etc..

Good luck :-).

This must be the best suggestion I have seen on this site yet;) I will have to remember the link to the site that sells cast iron tripods.
