Hello All,
I will be shooting my first actual "job" next tuesday.
It will be of a family at there farm. Based around the fall colors.
My questions are.
1) Anyone have any techniques on how to shoot a family of around 5? eg. positioning, group shots, where to shoot on the farm, etc.
2) I know people like kids shots, so I will focus on kids a lot. Now do I just direct everyone on where to go? How to act? Or I just let them do there thing and I take photos?
Any other tips would be greatly appreciated.
Thanx in advance all.

I have a wee bit of experience in this department, but not tons. This is an awesome time of year for outdoor shoots, though. The sun goes down around 6-ish and gives this GREAT light which you don't get in the summer.
Use the elements in the farm, hay bails, fields, tractors..leaves. Whatever! Have them bunch together to look like they're keeping warm maybe.
That's what I do! Remember to keep the kids in front for most shots, other than that, take a list of ideas and take lots of each shot to make sure everyone has their eyes open. I like to have subjects stand directly in the sun, the right positioning creates some stellar images.
Good luck! Post your results please! |

Do you want them all posed together for each shot? That could become a little stale and boring.
Try taking shots of each adult in their environment, ie on a tractor, in the kitchen etc.
Do some family groups as well.
But I think this is a chance to show the whole family at work and play. |

Thank You for the suggestions.
I was thinking more of the kids grouped together and the couple with each other. I dont want to clutter 5 people into a shot you know?
Edit: I will be taking some group shots but that is not what I want to focus on.

Fathers and sons, mothers and daughters makes also kind of traditional and nice pictures. And try compostions where adults or older kids play with younger kids and adults in their working environment with older kinds helping.
Kind of old school and perhaps too traditional but these things work. But if these folks are some kind of neohippies farming organic food you might want to skip these very traditional compositions ;D.
Good luck man! And remeber to have fun! If everyone is relaxed and on a positive mood you get some extra kick in your picktures (and perhaps some extra bucks for your wallet ;D).
