Hello dpc'er

I just want to share this test with you.
I have a Cheap Canon 75-300mm,and i found the Sigma 28-200 mm at very good price, even cheaper than the first lens, It is a very versatile lens due to its long focal range and its macro feature, but my only concern was about the image quality vs the same focal lenght of Canon lens, my question was "Should i have to carry both lenses all the time and decide wich one to use in every single situation?, so i shot some samples to test them.

I used a tripod and manual function, all shots was taken at 1/200s and F5.6

Here are the results:

Canon vs Sigma at 75mm //www.pbase.com/ramevi/image/34979238
Canon vs Sigma at 200mm //www.pbase.com/ramevi/image/34979255
Canon vs Sigma at 300/280mm //www.pbase.com/ramevi/image/34979299

The left image is from Canon and the right from Sigma.

Any thoughs?

Thank you.

You may have just sold me a teleconverter! :)

I just got a Sigma 70-200 2.8 a few days ago. It looks to me like the Sigma did a nicer job based on your test... or at least the exposure looks a little better to me. It looks like the ones on the left were a little blown out.

Bottom two items are currently using the same image (34979255).

Not to rain on your parade but it looks like you overexposed the Canon shots. Also I can´t imagine a sigma 28-200 (from what I have heard it´s crap) with a TC beating any version of the Canon 75-300.

Thank you for trust on me. But both photos are shot at identical situations and out of the camera without any kind of trick, i can send you the originals if you want to.

This is interesting. Clearly the canon is a brighter lens - there is simply more light hitting the CCD with the canon. This is arguably a good thing since it will mean you can take photos in lower light situations.

The Sigma with the 1.4x teleconverter appears sharper at 300mm but in fact the canon is very sharp but only on the front of the flower head. The petals at the back are outside the DOF and hence are blurred. This could be because the autofocus got it wrong or because the flower moved in the breeze - any number of reasons really.

The contrast on the sigma looks better but to my eyes the colour on the canon looks better.

I found this comparison VERY useful because I'm presently trying to choose some new lenses and these two are candidates. How do they compare price-wise?

Thanks for posting the pictures!

Thank you John for your post!

You are completely right in your comments, in low lights situation Canon seem to be better, and sigma are much more versatile, is very hard for me to decide to keep both or not, or maybe i should sell both and buy more seriuos glasses, No wait... that's still not an option for me, Lenses here (Mexico) are very very expensive, about two times more expensive :(

Do you have any images using the sigma 70-200? What do you think of the lens? I've heard the sigma is a little soft and noisy. I'm trying to decide between the sigma and the nikkor 80-200 2.8.

I've only had it for four days, and a few of the shots I have taken I might consider using for the October Free Study... so I ran outside and shot a few very exciting (?) photos of subjects that happened to be handy :)

So far I like it a lot, although there is a bit of a learning curve involved. I have to use the 2.8 sparingly, as you have to really be spot-on for the focus to be what you want.

I had a crappy Quantaray lens that I've been using to this point, so this is a big step up for me, I think. These were both at f5.
