Should I get it or not. Are there any other low priced options? (17-40 L is too much).
Is there anything else as wide/cheap as the kit lens? I do not care if its a prime. Anyone know of anything? Id be interseted in stitching some shots together for panoramas, so the lens really shouldnt have too much vignetting or barrel distortion.

If you are going to stitch the photos together anyways, you don't really need a wide angle.

It may be a little expensive, but the Sigma 18-50/2.8 EX DC may be worth considering.
Alternatively there's the Canon 20/2.8 USM or the Canon 28/1.8 USM, both selling for around 400 clams..
The Canon 28/2.8 non-USM is also dirt cheap at $170.

Which kit lens are you referring to?
I have ended up with both but "accident". I wanted the 17-85mm "enthusiasts" kit but the store only got the basic kit and body only options. Body only were all sold before they reached the store.
However, they had some 17-85mm lenses on their own.
They therefore gave me the lens and the 18-55mm kit for what I would have paid for what I wanted and I scored the second lens for free.
The 17-85 lens I am very impressed with. However, it is the first lens like that I've had with IS, so that pays a part. Reviews on the lens I have seen since do not rate it as highly as I do, and it is probable those guys are a lot more selective than I am and know what they are doing a lot better.
As for the basic kit lens .... I'll never even use it, as that range is covered by the other lens I have. I have attached it once, just to have a play, and didn't like it at all. Probably not fair, but I just found it too light and plastic feeling.
I'm either going to just keep the lens so when eventually I sell I have a lens to include (as the 17085 is worth enough to sell separately) or else sell the 18-55mm now on ebay or similar.
In summary: If you were looking at the 17-85mm kit I'd give it a thumbs up, but if you are looking at the 18-55 I think I'd save my money for something else.
