I am very seriously considering spending $800 on a Tamron 300mm f2.8 Manual lens for my Nikkon. I have been offered some short term work photographing Footbal games for a website and was wondering if this lens would be a fair investment. anyone here ever used it or know anything about it?

I have read some reviews about the AF version and they are all good but I don't know much about the MF version & how it would handle a fast action game for sharpness / stop motion etc ... Thank you for any help.

You might want to look into a rental, prior to shelling out some hard earned $$. I live in Denver, and there are several photographic supply places that rent equipment. I rented an older Tamron 300mm f/2.8 MF lens just yesterday to play with at a soccer game and it only cost me $25.00 for Saturday-Monday.

I would love to see the results and also how you found the lens, here in Japan there is no rental place that i know of but i think I know the manager of the shop well enough to maybe ask to borrow it for the day if i leave the totalk ammount as deposit. please let me know what you thought of it.

Here's a Review of the Tamron 300mm f/2.8 lens.

Sold for US$2999 at B & H it is US$900 cheaper than the Canon version with IS. Is getting the brand name with IS worth the extra US$900? Only you can answer that question. Depends on what you need.

I guess it depends on how good you are with a camera, but for sports I'm thinking manual focus will be fairly difficult.

I found the rental place by talking to a Pentax rep. The name of the company is Camren Photographic Resources.

The lens did what I needed it to do. However, because I was outside, and it was an extremely beautiful, bright day, I didn't need that fast of a lens. The manual focus wasn't bad at all.

I've attached a sample from the lens, using my Pentax *ist D, that was taken today at f/4.0 at 1/1500.

WOW is that straight from the camera or did you post edit?.. either way its a damn nice picture. I think that what Paul said is right too about needing auto focus for sports but the review said the auto focus was very slow but very acurate, I hope i can manually focus just as fast and i used to have only manual lenses with my old Contax RTS so it will be like the old days. I have the Sigma 170-500mm but the f5-6.3 i fear is a little too slow for sports unless its a crisp sunny day.

thank you all for the input.

i should of added this in the first place.. this is the MF version not the AF

I don't think it is the same lens as the one alionic is talking about because it is an Auto Focus model (it's the same as the one reveiwed in the link doctornick posted) but Tamron is offering a $500 rebate on the SP AF300 f2.8 LD (IF) until Dec 31, 04. Also 6 other lenses are rebated for lesser amounts. You can download the rebate form from this Tamron website page: Rebates from Tamron

I have to say I can't even begin to imagine trying to use manual focus for football games. I'd be curious to hear from someone who has been successful in doing so...

The Canon 300mm/4L IS is $1149. It's f/4, but you get a LOT more for your extra $350.

Ed: Correct my sums. :)
