Well, here I am again asking for your comment of my portrait shots...this time, of people close to my heart: the Filipinos. I don't want to sound self-patronizing but Filipinos are the best models there are. Passionate, camera-friendly and beautiful...

Here are some examples:

Here's a Vietnamese girl:

Thanks in advance.

Oppss...Sorry?!..?

All of these shots were taken months ago (the latest was last June). Did I enter a portrait in the Master's? You will be surprised:)

Anyway, since I am not in the Philippines for 2 months now, the location of my master's entry was definitely not the Philippines. Thank you for recognizing my work (if indeed you're right). My style is becoming predictable that it now borders on being boring.

Time to diversify...(and learn from DPC giants like jacko, kiwi, heida, etc.)

Manny, your portrait work is beautiful as always. You really capture the soul of your subjects. That is never boring, IMO. I am an avid candid portraitist, though I too few chances to practice it. It's been a year since I last was in the Philippines, and I definitely want to get back. Hopefully next year.

Fantatic work as usual! I really enjoy that the portraits do not look posed. It's as though you captured a piece of their daily life and elevated it to art so we could all share in it.

My only problem with you work is that I would like to see more of it. The almost documentary look makes me want to see a series, or essay, on a subject, rather than just one image.

your style is far from boring, it think it's great that you've mastered the art to this extent, nothing bad in people recognizing your work when it's this good!!
PS. do you do a lot of work editing after? if you don't mind telling us...

I thought of you, while scoring the Master's Challenge photos when I was looking at a portrait. Then I decided it wasn't yours.....you have a very distinct way in which you use light for your shots.
Excellent use of available light.
You are right, your models are beautiful, and they convey feeling and warmth.

Randy

your National Geographic shot was my favoritein the challenge, and remains a favorite of mine....I dont really use the 'favorites' button here for some reason. But I've made a mental note of that image.

You know what is obvious about your portraits? That all of your models are comfortable and relaxed with you, which is no small accomplishment. Nothing makes shooting people ( with a camera) more difficult than nervous subjects and your subjects obviously like you and trust you. Technically, they are great and not boring at all.

Again, I have to thank all of you who appreciated my work. I get motivated by good comments and these make me raring to go out and take more pictures.

I do a a good amount of post-processing. Using Photoshop CS, my basic steps are auto-level (but I mostly skip this as it alters the color), unsharp masking, cloning (especially in the face area if it is meant to look lke a "fashion pose"). I also use shadow/highlight if I need more details on some areas (like the hair for example). Lately, I use diffuse lighting but not for my challenge entries. (BTW, is it allowed?)
