I have a few suggestions and some may not like them but it's just my opinion.
1. Clean up the site: If a Registered user has not participated in anything [signing in, voting, challenge, forum, etc.] in a predetermined time frame the admin will email them and let them know their account will be deleted if there is no activity on account in a certain amount of time. Admin will not have to worry about members because they have paid for there yearly membership. If they don't want to participate anymore they will not renew their membership.
2. Voting: I hate to say this but I believe the "competitive human nature" is coming into play when voting, for some people. Before I explain let me say for the record I am not suggesting anyone is doing this on purpose or is doing it at all. "Competitive human nature" during voting is subconsciously voting a picture lower than you would have based on where your average stands. EXAMPLE: One may believe that they have a great photo and believes it deserves at least an Γ’€œ8Γ’€ but their average is only Γ’€œ5.5Γ’€ then subconsciously they vote a photo that they believe to be as good as theirs a 5 or 6. Kind of like "itΓ’€™s not speeding if you are keeping with the flow of traffic". Hope that makes sense.
3. Viewing your score: I believe you should not be able to view your score during a challenge, just comments. Replace the average with an [up arrow] if your average is on the rise and a [down arrow] if your average is on downward swing. Then at the end of the challenge the average scores are revealed. I think this may help #2.

I totally agree with #1. It would help when people get usernames.

Well, I hope mine isn't put down after two years though because I am leaving for an LDS mission in about a week. I hope to find my account sill here when I get back.

I think not being able to view the scores is an AWESOME idea. Only problem would be: Wha's the selling point of being a member? (said totally sarcastically)

I don't know if I could handle the withdrawal symptoms of not being able too update anymore!

#1 -- no opinion.

#2 -- Is there a suggestion in there somewhere?

#3 -- It wouldn't be that bad. I would like some indication of how I am doing compared with the others. As it stands the scores don't give this until they are placed in a forum thread to compare. Having the up and down arrow change color to indicate relative position in the scoring would be enough. I view the scoring as a race that can be watched, rather than a closed event where only the outcome is known.

Cannot agree with #1. There are some wonderful shots around here from people who haven't submitted/participated in years. Rackat, anyone?

1) Fully agree with the registered users who have never attempted to participate.

Those that have participated and have photos in challenges might have their registration altered (locked) or left as is, not really sure if locking would make a difference.

2) I agree its called human nature.

3) Interesting idea that has been looked at before. I believe it could work but I think that some kind of indicator is needed (wanted, craved :))but maybe not as specific as it currently is, maybe something like a graph that would indicate what 10% of the field your score is currently in.

1) Fully agree with registered user who do take an active part in the site should have their details removed. This should be stated in the "Joining Info".

2) Being able to view the scores as they are received, there's something fundamentaly wrong with this. The results of a competition should be kept secret until voting is finished. To be honest I find these threads discussing "how my entry is doing" in the current chalenge very disturbing. I'm a relatively new member but I lok at a lot of the forums and that sort of discussion is really off putting. It is indicative of a club within a club, some little clique that even though you are a member, you're not really in.

Or is that just me??

Remember, just because you're paranoid it doesn't mean they're not out to get you.

1) Yes.

2) What?

3) This is addressed in this thread.

1. Actually this thread was started before the link you posted [see times]. I first posted it in this forum but after getting a few replies thought it would be best post separately so it would not hijack their thread [get it off subject].
2. I noticed you had a ? Mark under #2 and I understand. But I do believe the "factor" does come in to play sometime, subconsciously.

I did not start this thread to make trouble I just wanted to offer a few suggestions. Didn't mean to step on anyone's toes and did not post this because I am ashamed of my score in the current challenge. I am quite pleased with my current score.

Regarding # 1, I like the idea but some great counterpoints have been presented in this thread.

Overall, though...those people should not be voting if they're not submitting images on a 'kind of regular' basis.

on number3 maybe they can at least supress someones score and not make it available until they have themselves voted on all other entries...

A good suggestion but then they can go back and adjust their votes.

I just found SpreadFireFox action button today. The are trying to make 10,000 new members in 10 days. I'm not saying we need to grow like Mozilla, but there were some voices about getting more exposure for DPC.

I thought their idea of promotion, based on Volunteers is very interesting and up to the requirements of "WWW Age".

Edit: some typos.

I, personally, don't know if DPC *does* need more exposure.. the base here is quite high, and 400+ entries in open challenges is.. well.. getting a little unweildy. What we *do* need is to get more of the registered users to become members :)
