Hey Guys,
I am having a problem with my outlook express. I can receive incoming amil but I can't send any out. My work computer also has outlook express for the same accounts & has no problem sending & receiving. However my home express can't.
I have tried everything. I tried to sync the outgoing with the incoming, I tried asking for a security certificate, everything.
It's a real pain not to be able to use my accounts. Any help out there?
Thanks in advance!

Tools > Accounts > Mail tab. Highlight the name of your account. Click on properties to the right. Click on the servers tab. Your incomming mail is probably using a pop3 server. Below that you should see the names for your incomming and outgoing server. Usually it is something like mail.domain_name.net or pop3.domain_name.net for incomming. Outgoing is usually smtp.domain_name.net. I'm guessing the problem is with the outgoing account. |

There could be a number of reasons. First, your outgoing mail (usually - smtp or mail. something) - does that have a restrictions? Like your outgoing mail from a certain server restricted to a certain domain or range? That's one of the reaosons it might not work.
Another reason could be the service provider. If your work service provider or the type of service is different to the provider or service at home, that might give different results for the same settings. |

Unless the server name/IP has changed then more than likely you will have to use your internet providers outgoing mail servers IP.
Id call them and ask if anything changed. |

If your 'work' changed servers or if they introduced restictions where only a range of IPs are only allowed to use their mailserver, you will not be able to send it from home unless you are added to that list either by email address or a static IP address. When you hit the servers, you will be seen as an intruder. Just one scenario.
But it would be best to ask the people who are handling this, as MadMordegon suggested. |

If you have multiple e-mail accounts, you don't need to always use the unique smtp server for each. Find the properties on a working mail acct on your home computer and duplicate that smtp server info for the non-sending mail acct. Should solve the problem. |

True, I use the same outgoing server for all my accounts. But our servers changed a while ago and was restricted to a certain range and I couldn't send from home.
I had to ask the administrator to allow my email address to have access from another IP.
In my case my outgoing server was work email server. And my service provider would not allow me to user their mail serever to user mail accounts outside their domain. |

my accounts are from my sister's website that I manage. none of the accounts ssnd outgoing mail. this blows!
the host allows me to autoconfig to outlook express & that's what I did. i dont thing that the work changed servers tho.
who should I contact? Internet people? Outlook express people? web host people?

Do you have any specific error messages? That will tell you what the problem is. However, it sounds like a corrupted outbox (that is unless you are a SBC/Pacbell customer in which case it is most likely the server as several are down today).
To fix a corrupted outbox first delete all the messages in your outbox. Shut down Outlook Express and search for a file on your computer called Outbox.dbx. Delete it. Restart OE and it will automatically create a new outbox. If the problem is indeed a corrupted outbox this will fix it.
EDIT: Test it by sending an email to yourself.

i just did a search for outbox.dbx & looked in the outlook express folder & NADA!
where else could it be?
this is the message I get
"The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'roostafari@psychoartgallery.com', Server: 'mail.psychoartgallery.com', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E"

i had the same problem when i was using earthlink and started using a firewall. earthlink bounced back all my outgoing mail because the firewall had a dynamic address, and earthlink required a static one. as a result, i had to use earthlink's webmail program to send and receive, then i'd use outlook to collect stuff from earthlink. a real pita, to be sure. maybe this is your problem? |

Try a search for *.dbx , that will pull up all the various mail folders you have.
On win2k it would be someplace like...
C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{the identity identifier}\Microsoft\Outlook Express
On win98 it would be someplace like...
C:\Windows\Application Data\Identities\{the identity identifier}\Microsoft\Outlook Express
I haven't seen other flavors of windows (xp etc) in years but they are all sort of similar.

The 0x800CCC0E error code is a general cannot connect to server error message. If you can connect from work then there is probably a configuration issue with your home OE. Are you sure that your settings match? The proper people to contact would be the administrators of the email server you are using. They'll need to provide you with the proper settings. However it is easy to double check your home settings vs. the ones at work. Make sure the outgoing SMTP mail server name is correct. Check to make sure the authentication check box is set properly (either checked or not depending on the server configuration). The correct server port number is set and if it requires secure connections.

I think that error also occurs when you install Microsoft Updates. I had that a long time ago and I downloaded a patch from somewhere to fix it. It has something to do with encryption. 64bit and 128bit .. something like that.
I no longer use Ooutlook or Outlook Express. But I do remember getting a patch for that.
edit: Secure SSL - yeah that's that problem I had. It couldn't handle 128bit encryption. I needed a patch to turn it from 64 to 128bit.

Double click My Computer and click Tools, Folder Options, and then click the View tab. Under Advanced settings make sure the radio button for Show hidden files and folders is selected. Click OK.
If this isn't selected you won't find any of the important files in a search. Now you can search again. There will be a .dbx file for every folder in OE. |

This is the generic (microsoft express) can't connect error. The Secure Socket Layer (SSL) could mean that the servers security level has changed (they would have informed you) or something went bump in the night and OE got changed on your system.
Open Outlook
Tools > Acounts > Mail Tab > Highlight your Connectoid > choose properties
Click on the Advanced tab
Second Line from the top This server requires a secure connection (ssl) is that checked? If so try unchecking and try sending again. If that doesn't solve the problem then go back and put a check mark in the box.
The error message tells me that either the client is trying to connect using SSL and the server is not using secure sockets or vice versa. I have seen this one with earthlink many years ago.
Other things that break OE: Norton (firewall), McAfee (Antivirus), Dr. Solomn (Antivirus), Checkpoint VPN client, MTU Size... Have you installed any new software recently? |

Yeah, that's what I was going to suggest. I use mail from my domain and could send it using mail.mydomain.com when I was using Road Runner. Now that I've switched to Comcast, I have to use smtp.comcast.com. It has something to do with blocking spam and relaying and whatever. |
