Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR II

So I just got it today from 17th street and I've noticed that there seem to be pieces of dust or fibers inbetween the glass... yeah inside the lens. I also notice that there are spots on the glass surface that seem to glow when the light is reflected a certain way. Does this affect the photo? I was wondering is this just because of cheaper manufacturing? or is this something I should get serviced right away or exchange? I can post pictures in a few hours if needed. Thanks in advance!

ps: tell me what I would need to take pictures of to test? Other than a macro of inside the lens... which i might be able to do.

I just looked at mine and i can`t see fibers inside the lens but if a shine a torch right through the lens i see what looks like dust spots. This must be on the inside because i just cleaned the outer glass.
It however doesn`t show in any photos i`ve taken with it.

i don't have mine yet - but if i got it today, and found dust inside it, i would exchange it.

Try taking a picture of a solid white or light-colored background. Any dust spots or other flaws should show up nicely. Good luck.

you won't see any dust spots on the photos directly...even dust on the low-pass filter directly in front of the sensor only shows up at really small apertures. you'll get a reduced contrast when it's really dusty but light doesn't travel through a lens in a way that would make the dust visible in any way.

having said that, i'd take it back if i had dust in it.

great lens to have, i have the 1.4 version but they're both great lenses to have. nice head and shoulders portrait lens on a 1.6x crop and terrific for shallow depth of field and low light.

your not gonna see any dust at 1.8 The depth of field is way to shallow. Try to stop the lens down all the way you can.

Wow. After seeing this, I was afraid to look at mine (which I just got a week ago). I don't have any inside dust thankfully.

If I were you, I'd call and ask them to pay return shipping and return it.

But if they won't, you might also see if a local Canon facility will fix it under warranty.
