Black & White
Doesn't even need an explanation.
It has been over 2 years since we had a B&W challenge.

Duotones actually fall under B&W. Since the traditional way was to tint B&Ws |

Given the recent debates over the definition of challenges I wouldn't be surprised if someone submits a colour photograph and then argues it is valid since white is the the reflection of all colour. :-D |

Just don't go to a zoo and photograph a penguin. Zoos are the opiate of photographers. If you want to take a good penguin shot you should have to go trekking out into the far southern corners of the world with nothing but camera equipment and water.

Then it would probably violate the "literal representation of other art" rule since we would, by definition, be evaluating nothing but the perfect reflection of a pre-formed pattern off a white surface ... : ) |

I'm sure this has been posted before but it is still one of the best strips from the Calvin and Hobbes Cartoons:
C: Dad, how come old photographs are always black and white? Didn't they
have color film back then?
D: Sure they did. In fact, those old photographs ARE in color. It's just the
WORLD was black and white then.
C: Really?
D: Yep. The world didn't turn color until sometime in the 1930s, and it was
pretty grainy color for a while, too.
C: That's really weird.
D: Well, truth is stranger than fiction.
C: But then why are old PAINTINGS in color?! If the world was black and
white, wouldn't artists have painted it that way?
D: Not necessarily. A lot of great artists were insane.
C: But... but how could they have painted in color anyway? Wouldn't their
paints have been shades of gray back then?
D: Of course, but they turned colors like everything else in the '30s.
C: So why didn't old black and white photos turn color too?
D: Because they were color pictures of black and white, remember? |

Surely it isn't two years since a black and white challenge? I'm certain there's been one in the less than two years I've been around ... but It's too late for me to go checking.

B&W would be great, but lets leave the duo-tone for another -- shall we.
