I am looking for a flash to use on my 10D. At this time I am not very certain of the budget, but yes something less than $300 ? The problem with 10D built in flash is that it creates shadow with wide angle lens ( 17-40 in my case ). I want something that can help me with pictures of a small get-together, a group of let's say 5-10 ppl.
Also what kind of flash would I need for a larger group? let's say a party in a big enough room to accomodate 100 ppl? I am just curious to find if I need very different flash for the two or one flash that can do both ?
thanks,
Gaurawa

Don't know the US prices, but the 420EX or 550EX from Canon are the best way to go...preferably the 550EX as you can use 420's as slave units triggered by it.
A cheaper option, and one I have heard good reviews about is the Sigma 500...but I expect someone out there has one and will make me eat my words. |

Any flash creates shadow when not used properly, but you're right about onboard flashes: they ALL create shadows [10d or not].
The best flash out there is Canon 550EX. Cost is about $500CND. Worth every penny.
A $300 flash on the 10D wouldn't really make sense. It's not a huge price difference considering the quality difference.
I had the 540EZ and it was slow and loud, I think it was $350CND. I sold it. |

Try the Sigma 500 DG Super. It sells for less than $200. I've used it in weddings with my 28-135mm, and have experimented with it with my 17-40mm. It's very similar to the more expensive Canon 550. I like it...

Really? How far of a reach does it have? I find the 550EX, as powerful as it is, sometimes doesn't reach far enough. Any less and I'd be screwed. Do you know the specs for the Sigma? |

10 m less than the Canon 550EX, I believe.

I went with a Metz. The 54MZ-4 and I love it. The head tilts to verticle and swivels,, great for bouncing off walls. |

is it loud?
The shorter distance is a drawback..that is for large churches I mean, where usually I'mstuck towards the back because the officiate won't let me shoot at the front.

Another question
the Metz I think is A-TTL while the Canon 420 or 550 are E-TTL
any comments which one you like or which one is better ?

It has an E-TTL mode, that kicks in.. it requires an adaptar, SCA 3102, I use the flash with an off camera bracket so it also is part of extending it. |

I would really investigate the e-ttl factor if not buying Canon ... though it looks like it can works (thanks for the info there JC).
I have a 420ex and love it ..... most of the time. Every now and then I wish it had a little more oomph and wish I'd gone for the 550ex. However, that is rare, so overall I'd still say the 420 is a great unit for the $.
I will upgrade my 420 at some point, maybe keeping it as a slave unit, but will replace it with the 580ex when it comes out.
When the 580ex comes out you might se a lot of 550's dumped on the market and pick one up really cheap.

I have the 550EX and I love it. So many features that I need to learn how to use properly. As far as shadows go, look at //www.lumiquest.com and maybe they have something you can use. I have their 80/20 and big bounce. I use the 80/20 a lot indoors and the results are amazing.

I use the lumiquest soft box on my 550EX flash (canon 10D too) and the 80/20 looks really useful as well. The soft box has allowed me to take shots I just couldn't have gotten otherwise
