My general purpose lens bit the dust awhile ago (partially why I haven't been entering challenges in awhile) and I decided to make some adjustments to my collection. I guess what I'm going for as my "ideal lens set" right now would be the 17-40mm f4L, 24-70mm f2.8L, 70-200mm f2.8L IS, and the 50mm 1.4mm.

I finally sold my Sigma 12-24mm today and I am planning on picking up the Canon 17-40mm f4L lens tomorrow. Anyone else shooting with it?

I'm also going to pick up a new studio tripod, what do you guys think about the Manfrotto 3246 tripod with 3047 head?

If the photo gig I am doing next week goes well, I'll pick a 70-200mm of my own (no more loaning from my friend LoL).

I'll be very intersted in your impressions of the 17-40 f/4 L. Your ideal lens set pretty much is exactly the same as mine. I'm working my way down in focal length, having picked up the 70-200 2.8 L IS and the 24-70 2.8 L. Right now I've got the inexpensive Tamron 19-35 f/3.5-4.5 as my wide lens, and don't know when I'll replace that. I'll prolly rent a couple of times to see how dramatic the difference really is. I'd really like the 16-35 2.8L but I'm somewhat put off by the price, and it seems to get less stellar reviews than the 24-70. I'm still hoping that Canon will introduce something new in wide angle for EF (I'm not really interested in EF-S).
I have the 50/1.4 as well, and the 100/2.8 Macro USM. I would not do without either of them.

You guys are making me jealous, and I don't like coveting :-)

I was at Seneal Camera last week and they bragged about the 17-40 f/4 L...
For $1000CND they told me [again, who really knows] it's the best 'bang for your buck' as far as really good glass goes.

Sigh...

This is my take of it too. I use it quite a bit and am very happy with it. I've also used the EF 24-70mm f/2.8, kirbic mentions, which, IMO, is stellar but also considerably more expensive.
