Pretty straight forward in MS Word, or any kind of Paste Up software (Quark Express, Pagemaker (In Design now, I think)). Use Photoshop to edit the photos and save them at print ready resolution. Then pull them into the diary pages in Word et al. |

Neil, Word doesn't have a "diary maker". I think Charles was suggesting Word as an easy way to put something together. Just type what you want and insert the images where you want.
Depending on how well you know PS (or whatever you use), you can create a 'new image' equal to the size of the page you want. Then create layers of images and text, print, and you have your diary/scrapbook page.

What's best is probably going to depend on the way it's going to be output and what it's being used for.
Perhaps some publishing tool like pagemaker would be appropriate? |

As someone who outputs pages for a living please do not use Microsoft Publisher.
Any old layout program (sometimes the older the better) will work; Quark (versions 3-5), PageMaker (versions 5 and up), InDesign (versions 2 or CS) would work, especially if you learn something about "master pages." Use Word as a last resort.
Photoshop is bad for layout because the files will get humongous, and you have a separate file for each page. Illustrator (v 8, 10, or CS) or FreeHand (v 8 and up) are OK, but better suited to laying out single pages, like a poster.
Is this for print output (color or B+W), for the web, or both? If both, look into using Acrobat PDF files; most browsers will just load one of those up, so you don't have to do any HTML formatting. You can save both hi- and low-resolution PDF files from the same layout. |

You could use Canon's PhotoRecord.
I got it free with my Canon printer.
It allows you to add themes and change album types.
You can add text boxes where you please also.
Here is a quick screen shot:
I have printed albums for friends and family using Thanksgiving photos and etc.
