Does anyone have one of these little babies that lets you dump images from a CF card to an iPod?

linky link

I am considering an iPod upgrade specifically for this purpose and would like some feedback.

Thanks!

Belkin's Media Reader is supposedly dog-slow. They have a new version that allows you to connect the camera itself, rather than the CF card, to your iPod. It's considerably faster and cheaper.

Ive got an iPod and wonder too. anyone actually have one?

I have it. It's ok, it's slow and I only use it when I really have to. It did come handy when I was taking pictures of my niece's wedding a few weeks back - used to 2 gigs for the wedding itself and I still had to do the reception and we were nowhere near a photo store to buy another CF card. So on the car going to the reception, I dumped everything to the iPod - saved my life, really. Just make sure that the iPod is fully charged as the Belkin gets it power from it.

FYI- The Digital Camera link I noted earlier has its own batteries.

Like flip89, I have the Belkin CF to iPod reader. Yes, it is painfully slow. I used it out at Burning Man and it did work well, but had to make sure that the iPod was fully charged, else I downloaded twice to make sure I got all the photos. You may want to wait for a faster version, otherwise it is a great little devise.

hrm...now it's time to find another option.

any more opinions?

THE BELKIN DIGITAL CAMERA LINK IS FASTER, CHEAPER AND HAS IT'S OWN BATTERIES. So what's the bummer?

it occupies your camera so you cant shoot as a card downloads.

Although, in theory, some card readers should work as long as they comply to the ptp standard.

EDIT: If a card reader for your computer is ptp compatible, you should be able to plug it into the usb link in the camera link thing, and in theory it should work .

i looked at both versions, and the old one had batteries too (4 AAAs). so if the reader got it's power from the ipod, then what were the 4 AAAs for?

just wondering. have you used the new one? if you have, then how is it on the battery life of the ipod?

The old version of the Belkin card reader to iPod does have it's own power (4 AAA batteries). Really the only thing not good about it is speed.

just in case people have the new click wheel ipod. the new belkin digital camera link doesn't work with the new ipods (click wheel ones).

at least that's what the link says.

hey folks, i use an archos gmini 120 and highly recommend it. it isn't perfect, but it has a built-in cf card reader, a 20 gig hard drive, and is cheaper than an ipod. for something sleeker, consider the gmini 220, which is advertised as smaller than the ipod, can view grayscale images, and also has a built-in card reader.

i also use the archos gmini 120 and can't speak highly enough about it. It's a mp3 player, recorder and cf reader all in one. It reads the cf card from a cf slot on the device and copys to the divice quickly. It's saved me so many times. Now i don't have to buy another large cf card to carry all my photos. with the gmini 120, i have unlimited capture ability. ive used it for several weddings and has been a real time saver. it has allowed me to keep shooting with a second card while it downloads to the device. It has a usb connection that requires no software to be reconized by mac or pc computers. its a great mp3 player too. very easy to use and play music. the best part of all is its only $200 hope this helps!

In case anyone is interested, I just scored a deal on a Gmini 120 at Circuit City for around $180. They are closing them out.

I was there for something else and stumbled across this. I've not opened it yet, but it seemed like a great deal (especially considering I already had a gift card to soften the blow...) :)

I will report back later.

Was that from one of those recommend 5 friends things??? I have heard 2 other people say they have got one for free!! Can you PM me the details?

Apparently there is a 60Gig ipod coming out soon that you can download to from a camera. USB2 or firewire but not sure which. I would imagine they have the battery issue resolved?? It has a colour lcd as well.

OK, it appears the Gmini 120 is a bust.

It works great and I got it all updated only to realize that it won't recognize the .NEF files on my CF card. I'm not trying to display them -- but they don't even show up on the file browser and won't copy when I dump the CF card to the drive.

Any other Gmini 120 users out there? Have you tried to copy anything but JPG from a CF card?
10/12/2004 11:56:53 PM · #21
I grrr'd too soon. There's a "view all files" option that I didn't have turned on.

I Google.

Off to play some more...

i've copied movies from my 828 and the movie file and .thm file both copied fine. also, i've used it to back up non-picture data off my computer and it did it without any gripes. i'm not sure what's up....
