Anyone have any ideas of what I can do to this background so its not so distracting? Comments?

What I would do :
Select the dog using the magic wand repeatedly with the shift key.
Invert the selection.
Use curves to make it black or less distracting.

Do you think the flowers are that distracting or am I just worrying about something that really isn't that bad?

the background isnt bad actually.

i would use a blur tool to blend it in and make it less sharp than subject. maybe crop a bit to give yourself less work.

I think maybe just a tiny bit of blur added to the background would do it. The puppy stands out quite well as it is.

It isn't bad, or anything, just that black will work better, IMO.

I think that actually the frame of the chair/bed lower right and lower left is more distracting than the flowers. Otherwise a really cute photo!

I guess dulling that out would be the best solution for that...

the contrast is high enough that you could effectively use the Extract Tool in PS.

Here is an idea on minimizing the background:

Select,G blur and remove colors

As you've got a cutesy image there I'd remove the whole background and his lead, then comp in a blue sky with a lovely, soft looking cloud. Then place him over it and touch in a gentle shadow underneath him. : )
