Chuck, I can only hope that, one day, my photo challenge entries will be as good as your outtakes!

Thank you thatcloudthere and gaurawa...I had two good outings this week...
The great blue heron was shot with a Canon EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 III USM lens. This picture needed a lot of editing because that lens seems to get real soft when fully zoomed.
The eastern hognose snake shot was taken with a Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM macro lens. This is my favorite lens. All I really did was crop this one... |

This is one of my outtakes.
I think I submitted the correct one though.

I use the Canon 75-300 and don't seem to get that sharp focus, the reason I asked you :) |

Decided against these and chose something completely different (not marine) at a wildlife reserve - so this doesn't give anything away. It was a difficult choice though - I'm madly in love with sea otters (almost extinct, poor little fellows).

The second one should be titled "Oh no, not again". The second otter could be "Pleaaaaase...".

Went out on a 3 mile nature walk yesterday.
Only had one "outtake".
Sitting Ducks
Wildlife was in hiding, probabaly watching the "fool" (me)
wandering around in the hottest part of the day, while
they were staying out of sight and cool.
Maybe I should have stayed out of sight judging by my score...

These are my outtakes. I had a really hard time choosing between the three I liked the best. Now I'm wondering how these two would have done. Would really appreciate any feedback!

Looking at your outtakes, I am sure you would be doing very well in this challenge. These shots are great and they both would have got 7or8 from me. I like the OOF background and clarity on the subject. Very well done |

California Condor:
This was not taken during the challenge week but it is a very, very rare California Condor, largest flying bird in North America, and YES... this picture was captured in a natural environment.
This bird is not in captivity. As of January, 2004 there were only 89 of these truly gargantuan birds in the wild out of a total species population of 215.

Oh my, there's got to be a story here! They are being brought back from the brink of extinction and from what I understand, it's even incredible just to sight one. (although the nesting sites are probably known to scientists) How did you ever get this magnificant image! |

I have my secret ways with ugly birds...
Truth is this condor hangs out at a place called Navajo Bridge crossing over about a 500 foot deep canyon of the Colordao River east of the Grand Canyon. He was just sitting peacefully on the rail of the bridge at the time. Since it is over 4 feet tall it makes quite an impression!

So, really, it's just like the rest of photography. Be in the right place at the right time - with your camera!
Very, very nice. |

I knew a British guy that said the same thing...
Stunning image by the way. To capture something this rare, so well, deserves a Well Done!

Yes, thanks! My entry is hovering just over 6 which is not bad for me. And I did go back into the original quail/bobwhite picture and did some selective gaussian blur which maybe cleaned up some of that messy background. Appreciate your input. |
