i just came in almost dead last for this submission.

i know it wasn't award-winning, but just wanted to clear something up. i got a lot of comments that it was bad or disturbing.. truth is, i didn't realize how it could be taken badly until i really looked at it again. i guess people were mistaking the mud for blood and perhaps thought the sledge was hitting me, whereas I was simply holding it.

anyhow, anyone i offended or disturbed by my least successful entry yet, i apologize.

I don't think you need to apologize. It is your vision and your passion. I commented on it as 'disturbing' because it "spoke" to me. I saw it as raw and actually scored it high. I think it got voted down not because of its 'gruesome' content but because the connection to complexity was perceived as tenuous.

I gave the photo a seven.

I've felt like you before, many times. Photos like this do not do well on DPC, but shoot what you want. Don't let the score influence you too much.

I wasn't sure if it was intended to be "disturbing," but took it as a positive factor if it was ... this was one of my highest-scoring photos.

Maybe you were composing with your subconscious ... something to do with your username perhaps ...

"... told Augustine the story of the conversion of the celebrated neo-Platonic rhetorician, Victorinus (Confessions, VIII, i, ii), prepared the way for the grand stroke of grace which, at the age of thirty-three, smote him to the ground in the garden at Milan."

I was one who did mistake the mud for blood. Sorry about that. It looked to me like you were hitting yourself with a sledge hammer. That's why I voted as I did and made the comment I did. Thanks for clarifying. Ann

I think if you mistake mud for blood it makes an even stronger and better image.

And i don't think that you should apologize for it here. This is one of the better thought out and executed images, definitely better than a lot of boring stuff.

This is not anything "indecent", this is just not another flag or a cheesy flower. If it's disturbing -- even better, life is disturbing.

If someone is offended by something like this, perhaps they should go read a local newspaper instead or something.

I don't think there's anything to apologize for personally. I know I personally didn't vote it as high because I didn't see the connection to the theme of complex, but I thought it was a well shot image.

Either way, blud or mud, great image...

As mentioned, it doesn't convey a sense of complexity to me so I might have scored it a 3 or 4. The image itself deserves a much higher score, however.
