I've stayed out of most of these rant threads for fear of getting sucked in to the thoughts of others that can't be swayed no matter what you try to tell them. The site and internet in general has a my way or the highway mentality where everyone is right and everyone else is wrong.

I don't understand why members cannot see this challenge for what it is. Yes, there is a scoring and winning aspect to it which is needed. Yes, it spurs good conversation on voting and scoring sometime. I like a good debate but this is my first time doing DPL and what I am getting is a great private thread where awesome conversations on photography are going on. Maybe you don't have that with your teams and I'm sorry. With all these rants full of people crying about why their photo is scoring low I think most do not get what I feel is the main point of this site and the DPL....learning from each other.

Furthermore, I checked everyone in this thread so far and guess what, surprise, surprise!!! Every single persons average score received (for graveyard and Road signs) averages almost exactly or higher than YOUR average score received during your entire careers here on the site. So before bitching about how much better you "think" your photography is and how the voters are lowering your score check the stats.

Also look deep down inside and tell me you are not rushing and trying to enter in challenges just to help your team and get something in. Photo's taken and edited in haste will not score well. The added pressure of the DPL can also stress you a little. These things effect a score as well. I would have never entered a road sign challenge had it not been for DPL. Not my style and I don't care for them. I rushed, got something together for my team to critique, entered it and it showed in my score.

Average vote rec'd: 5.7765
Road signs: 5.4839
Graveyard: 5.4000

Just a data point. And I'm happy with both of my entries - thought they were well suited for the challenge. My teammates did, too.

To be fair, I have not been able to hit my average half the time (which would be logical) for quite a while now, so it's not DPL, it's my photography. There's that!

Edit to add my next two DPL scores sit at 5.6 and 4.3.

Have ever thought you may be taking this a little to seriously ?

SEG isn't the one taking it too seriously: it's the folks going on and on about how their scores are dropping that maybe need to lighten up and go with the flow...

This is an online photography site and as such the scores don't mean a thing in the real word, normally what wins isn't what's good, normally what wins isn't what you would show in an art gallery, normally what wins here wouldn't be chosen as a winner by a set of independent photography judges. Lighten up and don't forget that scores don't equal greatness and if you keep trying and trying to win here all you'll do is suck the part of you that you should be trying to enhance right out of your photos.

Nope. My main point was to not take it so seriously and learn from your peers through the challenge. Bear hit exactly what I was trying to say.

What's so funny is the people who don't think there is a competitive scoring going on are acting like the ones who do think this want the whole system blown up. When literally all anyone ever said is, it seems like the scoring is lower than what would normally be expected. Maybe YOU are the ones that need to lighten up.
I posted specifically that I am really enjoying the team dynamic but I know the scoring has gone down as a result of the competition. I don't think thats grounds for labeling me as a whiner or bitching or being too uptight.
I am 100% certain the score I am getting on my pastel would never happen outside of DPL, but I am still having fun.

I have drawn the same conclusions about scores as you bring up but... with that being said, i did this to bring my images up to my personal best. i wanted to push myself to learn and grow as a photographer, learn Photoshop & of course to put my best foot forward for my team. If my score is lower so is everyone else's. i could never do two challenges a week the way i'm doing it for the league and yes everyone is rushing but i would have to think like myself you are working harder for your own personal techniques and your league by putting more time in.
Basically, i'm following the path & hopefully it will do me good. i know this, i'm more relaxed focusing on this then all other everyday stressors.

Your comment seems to run counter to what SEG said: "Furthermore, I checked everyone in this thread so far and guess what, surprise, surprise!!! Someone must be mistaken.

One's average score over their entire time here might be quite different from (say) their average score over the past four months. My average is 4.7, but it has been (very) gradually climbing for a few months with a higher percentage of 5s, but right now I have three entries between 4.1 and 4.5 ...

My road signs score was my second lowest ever.

And my Road Signs score was over .5 higher than my average. But averages are just that - averages. Ya win a few, ya lose a few, and it all comes out in the wash. I just happened to "win" this one. I'm "losing" the next two :)

eh, I haven't been within .5 of my average on any DPL entry yet. The few comments I get just nitpick some minor aspect of the image. My style isn't as DPC friendly as it used to be, so my average has been drifting downward for awhile, but this is demoralizing.

Just out of interest Ann and so I can learn, where within your challenge portfolio do you think the image should be score wise please?

If I were stack ranking my own entries, I'd slot them into places about .3 points higher than where they're currently scoring.

I'm not complaining about their relative finish in the challenges. For the challenges that have finished, they're in about the right position. Just with lower scores.

I can relate, Ann. My Pastels is on track to be my second lowest score out of 500+ entries (yes, I am feeling like a real asset to my DPL team). The average score on an image is what it is -- it either connects with the average voter or it doesn't. But, I didn't anticipate this image would rank among my worst entries ever.

Almost since I joined I've found that mentally adding a 1.3 point "DPC-voter correction factor" to my current score usually works ...

I find itfunny that people are being hurt by the perceived or actual low scoring yet every challenge has a winner and for the most part I feel they deserved the win. Those front entries are good.

Can we agree on that point of not?

Maybe one small agreement will get us closure to a mutual conclusion. Maybe not??
