I just finished some minor modifications to this lens, the 35mm Steinheil Macro Quinaron. Yep, you read that right, a WA macro lens... in fact, it's a relatively extreme macro lens, goes to 1.8:1 magnification, at which point you are focused about a quarter inch from the front element, LOL.
I've owned this particular lens since about 1981. It's natively an Exakta mount, and I've fitted a Canon EOS adapter. The rim around the rear element and the bayonets on the lens mount interfered with the mirror on the 5D to too great an extent to use it, but with the 6D I was able to machine enough material off to clear, even at infinity focus. I went out in the back yard and shot a few test shots this afternoon, and I am really liking the results:
The above two shots were made at f/2.8 (left) and f/11 (right). Notice that the rendering at f/2.8 is very "dreamy." It still is relatively sharp at center, however, and there is even sharp detail near the edges, but "dreamy" due to astigmatism. At f/11, the darn thing easily exceeds the resolution of the 6D sensor across almost the entire frame, save for possibly the far corners.
Again f/2.8 and f/11, showing the rendering of OOF BG detail. Liking what I'm seeing, need to try some specular highlights in the BG
Finally, this shot is at f/5.6. Some of the "dreaminess of f/2.8 remains, especially at the corners. In the center it exceeds the resolution of the sensor
The above were uploaded at full resolution, feel free to pixel peep! |
