I've stumbled into a little problem
- ive got 2 photos of the same thing (for a challenge coming up) only one is with a border and one is without....

the border seems to add sophistication but aside from that really doesnt do much to the overall photo

the question is... when your in such a situation does sophistication generally add to the photo or not? and is a border a good thing to have in general?

hope some1 can help me out here...
all the best and thanx alot

For challenges, I would go without the border. A border can kill an image. Also, comments you get may only be about the border and not about the image itself.

Agree with cpanaioti! I for one look past the border (when it's at all possible) to get at the picture. And from the couple of pictures you have in your profile, you don't need a border to enhance your work. It stands on its own.

I think a nice simple border can help to "contain" an image. I use simple borders on most of my entries. What I really hate is a border that matches the main subject. An example would be a picture of pink cotton candy with a pink border. ugh.

I have learned my lessons with borders.

Go with a simple black or white border. Anything else is to much in a challenge.
Now for showing to your friends and stuff online it would be nice to give it a scrapbook feel to it.

hehhe i can deffinitely agree with you on the one with the borders that match the main subject....
what i was considering is one of those bevelled edges (sharp and very dark) for a photo in an upcoming challenge.... i guess the bevelled edge shifts the focus to the centre.... while without it its as if the photo keeps goin on to the back depths... so i guess its really a toss up but so far im going to lean more towards the non-border one considering the comments here :)
thanx and hope this also helped other ppl :)

Why deprive something of its natural manner?

true, though it does have an effect if a border is placed properly to enhance the natural manner of it as well? or am i getting things muddled up?
ive seen alot of photos and even in this masters challenge where i would keep the border... but on the other hand ive seen alot where i would like to see its absence as well.... i guess it comes down to personal preference so considering its about an overall photo and not the relationship between the border and the photo in question then possibly it shouldnt be there... though i am very torn on the situation...

Yes, I'm with Jacko on this. A border can have an indispensable function. I questioned the term "sophistication", which can connote a dubious complexity.

IMO, it is about the image; not the presentation of the image. If the border is adding to the image, it is no longer just the image being voted upon. The only time I would personally consider adding a border is if I feel the one DPC adds (a thin black line and grey matting) detracts from the image in some way. I would then look into the possiblity of adding something to reduce that negative effect. But I would probably just not enter that image. After all, if a very neutral border such as the one DPC adds detracts from the image -- the image probably has something wrong with it that I am blaming on the way the website is displaying it.

It does come down to a personal preference, but I personally prefer the image to stand on its own.

Borders can be helpful, but since I prepare my photos for printing, I don't put borders on them. Borders mess up framing and matting, so I've been going without borders for some time now.
