Truly, it's the voting. What a fantastic opportunity to see so many awesome photos!

"The voting", as in the process, I can get behind, if it's done thoughtfully, and with respect to each photo, as you seem to be implying. "Voting", not so much, but I've vented on that subject enough not to clutter up this thread with it again (suffice it to say that a number without critique is useless, particularly when the vote itself is critical).

For me, the value is in the leagues and working with a team. I came here not for competition but for peer evaluation. I'd hoped for it in the challenges but didn't find it. But in the team competitions when you offer an image to others for real, honest criticism, it's both humbling and extremely educational, because you learn to see your blind spots. It also forces you to be constructively critical of your teammates. You can't just say you don't like it, you need to be able to express not just why but what you'd do to improve on it. It makes you a better photographer and a better observer. And you find that the people you worked with are folks you can turn to when you get stuck on an image even after the game is over. It's the reason I've stuck around.

For me it's the comments, which I have at least one in every challenge but 3 I thing. So feel free to help and critique those for me. :) LOL

I've gotten more comments from non-voting teammates in the last 5 challenges (all pre-DPL challenges where I'd already received input from them) than comments from voters. I've watched an image fluctuate almost 1/2 point for 3 days now, which means it's getting a wide disparity of likes and dislikes, and it has 0 comments, so I have no hints that might possibly lead me to knowing why. I truly appreciate every person who takes the time, whether or not I agree with their assessment. I just wish there were more people to appreciate.

I do not comment on every image, though in some challenges I do. When I do, it's often to point out why I didn't score what I believe to be a solid image higher, because that's the kind of feedback I came here for (and thank you, GeorgesBogaert, for providing me with just that kind of feedback recently). I've watched in recent weeks as what I believe to be some really solid images do much more poorly than I, and those who helped me evaluate them, thought they would, and it would be great to have gotten some feedback other than my teammates' "I really would have thought this would have done better" - which is, of course, also appreciated.

For me, its the people here that make it for me, the community is now like a little family circle with the I have made and the people I have gotten to know, the comments that give true critiques to help improve, and of course the DPL which is beyond awesomeness itself.

It was the TPL that I really enjoyed last year and it helps give me that extra push I need to do better on my images. Voting, could do without but ya know, its a part of it too I will never understand.

Ye - the voting itself can be discussed at length, but it's the process of you yourself voting I'm talking about. For me, it's made me look properly at many photos I would otherwise never have seen. So far 5159 votes I have cast, means 5159 photos I have had to look at properly, which means a lot more awesome photos I have seen and would not otherwise have seen. :)

I really appreciate definitive, unquestionable critiques. Some people just know what to say. ;D
