I have a crazy Deskjet 990Cse inkjet printer at work that is spazzing out. I just discovered it's not printing yellow - and that's the only thing it's not printing. All other colors work.

Any suggestions? Or just pitch it out a second floor window?

Thanks

Pitch it!! I had one of those in my office and the wimpy paper feed drove me nuts.

I had that probelm with my Canon I900D one time and what had happened was I did not remove all of the little orange tape off the top of the ink cartridge and the printer was having trouble reading it :)

If that is the case I would then have to guess that the print nozzle may have plugged up.

Does the printer control software have an option to clean prints heads or check nozzles?

It was my understanding that HP print heads are in the cartridge. If that's the case, a new cartridge would fix this.

Not always; I had one that was separate, but it was a higher-end machine... but still a POS.
It does look like the 990 has it all in one, though, and so that would be the first thing to check. If it's not the printhead, pitch it and get a non-HP printer.

I changed the cartridges and ran all the cleaning and diagnostic stuff.

I read the instructions from the link posted above and it says not to retape a cartridge - which I did to the newest one after I put it in the printer and it still didn't print yellow. [so I put it away again and re-installed the old cartridge..apparently that's wrong!].

hmmmm

I think this falls under the heading of "it's not worth your time to diagnose." Use this as a lesson to your procurement folks about the true cost of equipment failures; how much work did not get done because folks could not print, and how valuable is your time spent on diagnosis? How much does it cost to purchase and isntall a replacement, including updating printer drivers for those who print to it?
When they see the true costs, they'll be more likely to buy someting that will be more suited to the business environment.

I know, this sucks, I've been through this tiem and time again with other employers...why higher staff for their experience and knowledge if you don't listen to them?

Oy vey.

Turns out the ink had leaked into all the chambers, so all the colors got mixed up. Don't know how. Who cares.

Thanks for all the posts! I'm now using a different printer and essentially did NOTHING all morning!
