Worth Noting

it's very easy to be so focused on what is right in your face that you don't see what's going on in the background until much later. this thumb is what i was shooting, just about 10 seconds before the explosion. click it to see an outcrop of what was going on in the background...

Wow! The fuel-man has some explaining to do. Right place at the right time, but keeping your wits about you to get the shot is crucial. Well done my friend.

Cool (exciting & scary) story Skip. I know you have a press pass, obviously, to get on pit row ... I'm curious, how many other photographers are on-site?

Wow! That's really being in the right place at the right time. Awesome Skip!

Its amazing the stuff that goes on unnoticed in the background of what you are framing sometimes. Great catch of the moment before.

too many!

not kidding. i'm guessing there are close to 135 credentialed photographers, in addition to writers, radio, and tv media people. to clog it up even more are the people given pit passes by the sponsors.

as for the photographers, getty has a contract with nascar and they have over 20 shooters. the track has at least 10. the ap had 3 or 4. the paper i shoot for typically has 5 for the race. unfortunately, there are a lot of web-pub shooters that get credentialed, then try to shoot with cellphones and low-end consumer cameras. rarely do they get anything of quality; they mostly just take up space. for me, it's just part of the challenge, working around others, trying to stay in bounds and getting good shots without getting in anyone else's way.

all in all, it was a good weekend. i got plenty of stuff in the paper, more online. you can see some of it here.

cheers,
skip

The shot of the 62 car during tire change is a beauty, the perfect amount of motion blur to indicate the controlled frenzy.
