Couldn't find another thread on this.
So if you don't live in Paris or Washington DC or someplace like that, you go to an old cemetery, right?
Seriously, I need some ideas. |

A bronze statue is a monument, so no need to fret they are everywhere, in fact I'm surprised how many there are over here, too much to choose from almost. |

I just assumed it was anything historical .. like a statue of a famous person?
But when I googled monuments in my area, I ended up with our local cemetery who does headstones LOL
I am sure anything statuey would be ok? (Is statuey a word?)

I think the adjective is statuesque -- but I've never heard of it being applied to an actual statue ...
However, everyone knows what you mean ... :-) |

I always thought DPC voters frowned on photos of statues. Maybe I'll be sure to include some context at least . . . |

Julie - I wonder if you are overlooking the Rock Island Arsenal? The Confederate Cemetery there may have some sort of "monument" - after all it is part of the NPS. Plus, just the Arsenal in of itself may offer something unique in terms of "monuments."
The Clock Tower is photogenic (sans the modern annex), but is it a "monument?"
My greatest concern, I guess, would be seizing photo opportunities without drawing the unwanted attention of security guards. And, since 911, I don't know what sort of clearance/pass you would need to access the island.
Anyway - just a thought...have fun wherever you end up

Zita, I have submitted that here before, did not too well...

Not bad though, I plan on going to blackhawk state park in RI this time around :-))
The arsenal is great about allowing you taking photos there in the and around that area, I carry my camera all the time around there no issues, they don't care at all and it is one of my favorite areas to be in esp around the bike path there

I am so glad I saw this thread. I was really unsure exactly what met the definition of a monument. Too bad I'm on the wrong side of South Dakota, we've got some awesome monuments in the west. |

looking back at the first Monuments challenge in 2002(!), it seems pretty likely that many of those top finishers would barely rate a meh score in today's DPC world.

In French, "monuments" include almost any famous place important to the history of the country. So on lists of the top five or ten most visited monuments in France, you will find Mont Saint-Michel (an abbey that dates from the Middle Ages), Carcassonne (a walled fortress), the Roman amphitheater and arenas of Nimes, several famous chateaux, chapels and cathedrals, a famous old cemetery (Pere LaChaise), a garden (les Tuileries), as well as what Americans would consider monuments like the Arc de Triomphe and the Place de la Concorde with its well known obelisque.
To be fair, voters are going to need to be generous in their interpretation in this one. |
