I'm not clear on this, regarding the rules. Possibly in expert there would be no issue, but this might run up against the "no new shapes" part. To make a circle appear as such, you'd have to use the DPC bg color and copy it as your bg color. |

that's what i was wondering...
I'm cropping off image area no different than a square or rectangular crop, the problem is that jpeg will force it to a rectangular shape and thus creating new area.. with png or gif this wouldn't be an issue. |

Wouldn't it just be an 18% grey border? |

As I said, I'M unclear. Perhaps one of the other SC with more knowledge can chime in. |

It is legal, if not necessarily advisable ... essentially you are creating a non-rectangular border.
A long time ago I demonstrated a method which would create a (slightly) non-rectangular border under the Basic rules, and I have one actual submission ...
Note that even if you make your background/border an exact color match to the DPC page BG, there will still be a 1-pixel black rectangular border around the actual image. |

Many moons ago I submitted this:
It was under the long-defunct Classic Editing rules, but (other than perhaps the shadow in the border) I can't see it being illegal under today's Advanced Rules. |

Kirbic's example is the issue. While you could probably get an exact match for the gray, you'd still have the square border. |
