That seems harsh...well, the part about the insects, anyway. I, too, DO NOT eat insects, nor do I eat many of the other things shot in this challenge (like bananas and tomatoes), but I try to see past my personal culinary habits when assessing the photographic prowess of others. If a photo turns your stomach, that's a pretty powerful photo.

Nah.. its just my voting style.. if I find a photograph repulsive, I vote it down.. doesnt matter if it was 'technically perfect'.

I'm a vegetarian.. doesnt mean that I'd vote down meat shots. However, I do find insects near an open mouth extremely disgusting.

Wow that surprises me comming from a vegetarian...since you are so aware of the nutritional value of insects (in volume). I'm a wuss, I never eat insects...but I admire those who do (but I don't kiss them!)

I did not summit to this challenge and I also am finding it hard to vote as well. I should have submitted my photo [it was going to based on odd combinations]. I was going to put a Big Mac and Super sized fries [1090 calories] with a Diet Cola [0 calories] together. I didn’t do it because it’s common. But after seeing how disappointed a lot of voters are with some/most of the photos, I should have summated it. Does anyone think that would have been a good submission?

Good concept, but you'd reeeeeally have to play up the angle you've just presented, otherwise most people wouldn't pick up on the ironic whackiness inherent in that combination, and you'd get voted down for a lack of the whack.

LOL

So I voice my voting opinions and someone takes me off their favorite photographers list... How I vote doesn't change my photography skills so what would change your selection of me as a favorite, me voicing an honest opinion? Hrm, maybe I should have just posted a thread stating: "WOW, great shots in 'Whacky Foods'! Congrats everyone!" Seems to be what everyone here is looking for, we're all winners... right?

How moronic.. I personally found Wacky Foods to be pretty low quality in general myself. A few really nice shots, a few very humorous ones. Mine was submitted basically to give me a chance to practice something I hadn't practiced much of, and it certainly did that, but my shot isn't very wacky, and the vote is showing it. *shrug*

I'm having a hard time voting much over 4 or 5 in this challenge. My poor avg. vote given score :)

*EDIT* OH, and for the record, my shot was done using a tripod, much planning, a dozen different set-ups and arrangements, lots of lighting, as sharp as I could get it without being over-sharp, and *NOT* in a kitchen ;)

While I agree that many of the photos seemed weaker than usual in this competition, there were quite a few that caught my interested. I ended up with 4 photos 9+ and 17 with 7+!!! So I feel this competition was not a complete waste, and still great photos came about from it.

ps: mine was also shot with a tripod and whitebalanced and focused (even though with my fuzzy lens) and cropped to what I thought was interesting... it was one out of maybe 50 shots I took so def. not a snapshot. Course my current 6.19 shows effort anyway ;-)

Actually if you check out USDA food standards you'll find that most people consume more insects (or their components) than they realize ...

I had some deep-fried grasshoppers at a Native American festival once -- virtually indistinguishable from potato chips except for the high protein content.

Wacky is defined as irrational or crazy, eccentric or silly... you don't think that falls under one of those?

The two events may not be related. Somebody has removed me as a favorite in the past few days as well (and I don't have nearly as many to lose). Most likely it was the same person doing some housekeeping. Perhaps a sharp blow to the head caused this individual to lose all sense of taste? Maybe he/she was trying to add you as a favorite again, and a weird server bug removed the original favorite instead? Maybe you've gone platinum as a favorite, and the light silvery color is hard to see against the site's gray background? ;-)

I'm done voting, and didn't give anything higher than a 7.

Better get ready to duck - all that left over whacky food is about to get thrown at you ;-)

I'm on a Whacky Food Free Diet, I'll pass on any that's thrown my way :-)

To be fair to crab, he and I talked and he has helped me with some of my shots. He gives very good advice. I agree that the challenge has many not so good shots (mine being one of them). This is the lowest I have scored a challenge for some time now.

Well Its like the curates egg this challenge, good in parts. for myself, yes I did plan it going 60 odd kms to the beach for sea shells.then shooting the whole thing completely different as the fruit suddenly took on an image of its own funny how thought processes go innit?!!!hohowever on the whole the ideas are there its the conception and standard of photography i have a problem with

I thought there were at least 2 top-noch, no-question fabulous shots in this competition (both 10s) and yet the rest of the shots, for the most part, huddled around the 3-6 range.

I generally don't vote down on disgusting shots, bugs and other unpleasant semi-edibles got fair billing from me, but there was a shot that I had to vote down because it was completely tasteless and disgusting, and if I could have had it DQ'ed so I would never have to look at it again, I would. Shame on that person, you know who you are.

They probably don't know...I know that LOTS of you are probably finding my photo disgusting, but so far I've only three comments on my photo, so I don't know that you are finding it disgusting.

Too bad it's taboo to talk about your shots before the challenge ends, huh?

Personally.. as one of the people who submitted into this challenge, it would be nice to have a great score... but clearly, that isn't going to happen all the time.

But when it doesn't happen it's nice to know why. I've seen a lot talk on this thread about how everything looked snapshotty... great. I'm around a 5.5 right now (from a high of 5.8) and have 3 comments, two of which are positive. Maybe getting some feedback as to why people voted as they did would be nice (thats what the comments are for right? "Good job" just doesn't really help).

It seems that the better the photo, the more comments, but that seems counterintuitive when they obviously know what they are doing, when it is the other end that is struggling and not getting comments to help them.

would my next to last scoring nude 2 challenge photo have scored better in the whacky foods challenge?

not overly whacky, but...

Probably not because it is not wacky. That said, I laughed out loud when I saw this in the nude challenge. I gave it a good score. I thought it was nicely taken as well. I don't really understand why it did so poorly. It wasn't human, but it was nude. :)

Doesn't fit the challenge in the least.

Nude? Some would say it was covered.

EDIT: Well dressed even.

Few reasons why this doesnt happen
- Some challenges have just too many photos.. its hard to comment meaningfully on every photo that is voted down.
- I've found that leaving a comment saying the you didnt find the photograph appealing, is marked as an unhelpful comment. I guess you just have to take it from the low scores that those voters weren't impressed by it.

How do you mark a comment unhelpful?

edited to remove quoted reference to photo

I'm not sure it's appropriate to be commenting on specific photos in a current challenge.
