Hi,

OK, so there is a challenge, let's say 'Wildlife' you go out and get a shot. It's OK. It's not a stunner, it is not the best that you can do, but it meets the challenge and you don't have time to try for a better entry...

Do you enter it?

Do you try to enter all challenges or wait for one that you can do a great job on?

I enter all I can - but I can tell you i don't rank that well :p

Hi Chris... Well I take that as part of the challenge! The challenge starts with the announcement! First the idea then the taking and then the editing, they are all apart of it.

I'm sure some would say don't enter it and that way you can keep a higher average, but if you enter every possible challenge then you will have a true average score.

That is how I do it... Oh and it seems to me that the ones I like least also get the higher score.. :)

Personally, I don't.

I generally try not to submit anything I am less than happy with. I find few things more frustrating than getting a dozen comments all pointing out something I already knew was wrong with the photograph.

In most cases I try not to submit anything I expect to score lower than my current average vote received (though there are rare exceptions and I do not always succeed at this).

How badly do you want to spend a week being reminded of this?

Depends on what you enter challenges for.

If you enter to learn, to stretch yourself and, ultimately, to try and improve yourself then entering something you already know isn't the best you can already will ultimately not give you satisfaction.

If you enter for fun, for the entertainment of the update button, for the camaraderie of moaning about current scores and daft comments then by all means enter. You'll still experience some frustrations when people point out flaws you're already aware of but if the main aim is to be part of the community that is entered, go for it.

NOTE I AM NOT SAYING EITHER ONE IS BETTER/ WORSE/ WRONG.

There is room enough for both approaches here on DPC.

From my own perspective, I personally wish less people would just enter something, anything just for the sake of entering because it reduces my desire to wade through the entries, to vote, to comment when I know that so many of the pictures were just entered for the sake of it and aren't even a good indication of the photographer's skills. Why should I waste my time considering them if he/ she can't take the time to produce something they are proud of?

That's just my personal perspective.

But I still stand by your right to enter just for entertainment. I don't own this site and my personal perspective is no more valid than anyone else's!

Here's what Dr.Jones told me when I became a member here

"you can participate to win ribbons or you can participate to learn"

In my case....judging by my results so far....I'm still learning.

The tough/good thing about challenges is that it forced me to try types of photography which realy never apealed to me...so I'm learning to apreciate the work of others better and I am also discovering that not everything is as easy as it seemed.

Ditto... I have created photo's in ways I would never have thought of if it was not for dpc. I have been extreemly proud of some of my photos and they have flopped on the vote but shit I learnt heaps from doing it and even more from the comments. I learn something new every challenge and photo shoot. That does not always tally in the vote though.

I think that if I am not satisfied with the shot I did for the competition, I will not put it in... If I am satisfied... Then sure I will take part even though I know it is not the best shot around...

I compete with myself ;)

A while back, I took a photo for the Literalism challenge. I didn't like it at all. I couldn't get the colors right and it looked washed out. I couldn't reshoot as the potato was browning. I considered simply not entering but ultimately decided that too much work had gone into the set-up that I'd submit anyway. That photo now stands as my highest ranking and highest scoring submission to date, as well as the top 12 of all DPC photos taken with my camera model.

Moral of the story.... Go for it.

I agree with those who say dont submit if you are not completely (or mostly) satisfied with it.

Remember--you can't remove a bad image from your portfolio if it's in a challenge. So if an image is questionable, and you just want feedback, wait until after the challenge and then post it for comments. Or post it elswhere, where they do more critiques.

But if you don't care what's in your portfolio, and want to learn by being beaten down by scores instead of by constructive comments (after all, in challenges you get many more scores than comments), then go fo it ;)

But in all cases, if you are happy and proud of an image, then it doesn't matter what it scores. If it scores low, so be it, that's the popular opinion, and you might not want to try and sell it. If it scores high, then you get an ego boost, and you know what works. (Scoring low doesn't mean it's not a good photo!)

Time and opportunity are an impediment - one has only a week to make something - however a deadline is part of the beauty of this site. Also given the eclectic nature and diverse variety of challenges..... seldom am I a expert. If I have a file.... I do my very best with it and submit. I think the idea of the community here is to compete as well as you can with what you have.

well let's just say that judging by the submissions for WackyFoods...many people have a different view on what is satisfactory.....

My one and only ribbon came on an entry that I almost didn't submit because I wasn't happy with it.

Having said that, I know enough about the DPC milieu now that I know when I have a photo that sucks so bad it's not worth entering. I also know when it's worth entering, but probably won't finish above the 50th %ile or so. My current entry in complexity is in that category. I was pretty sure that it wasn't good enough to be near top 20 status, but I liked it enough that I just wanted to see how it would do. Holding onto 5.5 now, barely.

LOLOL! This is usually how I feel after voting starts and I've entered a challenge. :)
