Hi everyone,
My wife's aunt sent me some scans of old family photos and asked if I could try restoring them. This is my first attempt at doing this kind of restoration and I'd love some feedback. What improvements could I make to the edited photographs? Any tips from people who have done this kind of thing before?
Thanks!
Philip

great job on the restoration!!!!. My monitor is out of calibration so I cant comment on colors and such, maybe try to sharpen them up a little, not much at all.

Very good so far... you're just missing the last few steps:
- Turn them to Black and White. (Then you can recolorize them to sepia)
- Add some noise (grain). Some parts look smoother than others due to processing. Grain will make the hole picture look more authentic.

The grandpa one looks pretty good. The grandma one has a good smoth background but there still looks like quite a bit of noise and 'texture' on the face and hair and looks odd compared to the background. A little blur on the face should help. I dont know if you intended to keep the color as the original or not, if not then they could both do with a little tweaking. Still, excellent job on your first attempt! |

Thanks for the feedback. I did want to blur the backgrounds and sharpen the people a bit to help the people stand out and also wanted to keep the original colors so that I don't alter the original photo too greatly. I just wanted a better looking version of the original. I'll try some of the suggestions you guys made to see if I can't improve the edited shots a bit.
Thanks!
