I don't think too many people will agree with their choice for first place. I am surprised it is in the top 20, along with a few more of the images.

I also wonder what fascination #1 held...

Well, it's the most *human* (or inhumane, maybe) of that bunch. But, seriously, look at it this way; everyone that voted for that image is one of the people that causes a bumper-to-bumper jam in the SOUTHBOUND lanes when there's been a wreck in the NORTHBOUND lanes....

I'm not saying it doesn't have SOME merit, just that compared with some of the other entries....

It also looks most like a picture taken with a cellphone....

Wouldn't that be a plus if the contest is for cellphone pictures?

I also see it as satire on "traditional" photography (think of what 99% of candid shots of women in swimsuits look like) -- a "punk" approach to the craft, showing the 99% which actually comprises "reality"...

#1 by Turi Calafato (Italy) would be my top pick because it is the most interesting, closely followed by the Craig Atkinson (UK) picture.

The others are all good photography, but that's really all they're about: photography (and by association the photographer). The Calafato and Atkinson pictures are more about the photograph itself; the nature of a photograph as a cultural icon, which is a more ambitious and durable impulse. And for me that's more interesting.

I've looked through the list twice, given it 15 minutes, and Calafato and Atkinson are the only two I now recall with any real clarity. All the rest I'd seen before, many times from many different photographers.

More clues into the ubique philosophy.

Count me in on having a great appreciation for #1.
The retro colors, the anti-fashion, the simplicity and yet the little details that could easily be part of a good short story. It has a timelessness and a humble subject that is goofy, fun, and current. THe treatment it just right for an Instagram culture but the composition and moment are extraordinary.

It also reminds me of a photo I snapped at a rest stop once. A large family was all asleep in the seats of their car. You could see the debris from a long trip. THey all looked as if they had been shot.

Just made the mistake of looking at the comments. Apparently the masses also believe #1 has little merit. Which, if anything, validates it as the deserving winner LOL.

I've been following Von Wong on Flickr for awhile now. This guy does some fun jobs and excellent work.

You can also see more, along with how it was done videos at his site.
