I am about to purchase a Canon 70-200 IS L lens and (if I can get one)a Canon 20D.
Is the Mack 3 year warranty necessary? I have a homeowner's insurance policy that covers camera gear. I have never been one to purchase extended warranties on electronics; it seems that I'd be betting on the gear to break down. Does the Canon product have a bad track record?
Thanks for the advice... |

I did not purchase the Mack warranty for my 70-200 2.8 IS. I felt the very solid reputation of this bazooka ...er... lens made it a fair bet that I will not need warranty work in that time frame. I didn't buy it for my 24-70L either.
That said, if you are risk averse, the Mack warranties are pretty reasonably priced as extended warranties go; I don't feel they are a bad deal at all. |

I started a thread on this a while ago and most of the people tell mot not to take such a warranty. I obeyed to them. :-)

Usually if there is a problem requiring warranty repair it will show up within the first month of use. I had a problem with my 70-200 f/2,8 IS within the first month and had to get it looked at by Canon, since then it's been working fine. The Mack warranties are pretty cheap for the 70-200 f/2.8 IS, only US$40 extra. I guess that's worth it for 2 extra years of peace of mind.
