Not at all impressed that only the top 5 in You Name It! are allowed to actually change their title. The remaining 98% of us aren't allowed.
I hear from people to whom I've told about the site that it seems pretty elitist and exclusionary, so they are reluctant to join such a cliquey site. Jeez, ya think?
And seeing that so far, only 1 of the top 5 has even bothered to exercise that privilege of changing their title, it's kinda slap in the face to everyone else who entered that challenge.
IMNSHO, dumbass challenge notes like that should NOT be allowed, and that the You Name It! one should be the first one where that particular challenge note is redacted.
So who's with me? And the other 98% of us currently not allowed to change their title?

I'm not viewing it as "elitist and exclusionary", nor a "slap in the face"... I see it as an earned perk for making the Top 5. No biggee. |

I'm not with you. I think the charm of this particular challenge is the fact that only the top 5 is allowed to change the name. It's the only one with these notes. And those other 98% percent can do as i did: I mentioned in my Photographer's Comments the name i picked from all the suggestion, so anyone that is interested can find it there.
And as for other people saying about the side: is it based on what they have seen or is it based on what you have told them? Can make a difference. |

Get a life, I would say.
I don't see anything wrong with it, as glad2badad said, it's a little perk to the top 5. |

I didn't see the changing of the title for only the top 5 as an issue until I actually submitted my photo and realized it would have no title forever. Then I was a little sad. (Although my entry was bad, so having not title isn't really an issue, but I guess I'm trying to say I understand where having a no title title might feel upsetting.)
I love the idea of picking my favorite title from comments and adding that to the Photographer's comment section. Perfect solution for me. |

The inherent problem with having an "award" of allowing the name to be changed is the confusion that obviously existed in the voting.
What does the top score have to do with how good a picture was at allowing other people to name it? Were voters voting based upon how good the shot was, or giving high marks for interesting naming possibilities? The best photo in the world could be boring to name, and therefore, out of place and useless to the challenge. |

Hummm interesting, could be both. The top 3 had over 50 comments each. |

I didn't even know we could change it. I really don't care about titles. I honestly wish we could do away with them. One of the worst parts of entering challenges. I think and image should speak for itself. The only time I think a title can be useful is when you are trying to shoehorn or point something out to the voter they might otherwise miss.
I don't know if I am going to change mine. I kind of like leaving it as it is and then having viewers read the comments and decide what they like best. |

You could be nice and choose my comment so I can see something of mine on the front page. :) |

Susan just some things to consider with your discussion.

--In any challenge there is a wait period for validation ranging from a short amount of time to a long amount depending on the time it takes for SC to communicate back a pass/fail. Perhaps the top 5 are simply choosing to wait for validation to come through before choosing a name ---just think how awkward it would be *if* there was a disqualification and they had a name already posted. Not only would it be a DQ but the title perk would have to be revoked too.
--Given all the participation that occurred where DPCer's suggested titles, perhaps the top 5 are stuck on choosing between two or more suggestions. I think that many who participated both in submitting and commenting will agree that there are quite a few suggestions to choose from.

You Name It II pulled in a total of 4,483 comments. The first You Name It pulled in a total of 6,220 comments. When was the last time you can point to a challenge that pulled in that many comments/participation? The main goal of the challenge(s) was for it to be fun and to get people excited about participating and getting some fun/interesting suggestions. Which is why it was best served (and pushed for) as an Open Challenge. Given the fall in commenting and participation The top 5 was just a added bonus, something to shoot for much like the ribbons and HM are for every single challenge In that I see absolutely no elitist aim or attitude. I am sorry that you feel that this challenge was a failure, but I disagree with your assessment.

Fine, DPC sheeples, fall into line. I'll just shut up and go back to making magic from my trees. That's far more productive and interesting; pity I can't do it all year round :-( |

Wouldn't it be sheeple? If it's people, not peoples, it would be sheeple, not sheeples, right?
You could just put the title of the photo in your notes. Or better yet, PM it to everyone. |

Placing the "winning" title comment in the submission's notes is a perfect solution. I just did so. Thanks, kroburg , for the suggestion. |

Not really disagreeing with you - just offering a different point of view. For me, the titles provide a great exercise to the photographer in choosing a creative and appropriate (and mostly unique) title for an image. Just like the challenges themselves give the photographer a wide variety of experience in creating and editing images, so the title gives a wide variety of experience in determining a title for an image.
I thought this was a great challenge, and really enjoyed the creativity folks showed in their suggestions. |

I'm glad museums put title placards next to displayed artwork ... otherwise you'd be telling your friends "did you see that incredible piece in the XYZ atrium, third room on the left, second painting on the north wall?". :-D |

"elitist and exclusionary"? haha, hardly, if you want that, head over to 1X where you can't even comment on a picture if they don't approve of your comment. Around here any old crazy ass tree hugger can say whatever they want about your picture and all you can do is find it helpful or not. |

I like the idea of being able to rename my image.
But really, I'd love to submit something better ... slippery slope ;)
Plus, there's just too much in life to worry about for something like this to be a concern - no offense. |
