Well, I broke down (or maybe the wife did) and I ordered the Alien Bee 800's. I got the Bogen-Manfrotto 13' light stands and the large Photoflex LiteDome softboxes. I'd been trying to wait until I could afford the Elinchroms, Broncolors or at least Speedtrons but a single light unit (monolight or flash head & powerpack) for those runs the same price as my whole order with 2nd day shipping. I got a commission today for a shoot this weekend and I have a studio session where I would have to rent some lights the following weekend so I figured nows as good a time as any. Hopefully I'll be able to pickup enough cash out of some shoots to pay off these over the next few months.
I won't be able to post photos from this weekend's work so it may be a week or two before I can show off my ineptitude with my new toys but I just thought I'd share the joy with the community.
BTW, sorry for dropping out on some people who requested portrait comments but I've been working on the tutorial and I have a couple of business deals in the works.

I use those 800s every day...they work well.
I work shooting school portraits and we shoot all digital(D70) with two AB800s.
One is shot into an umbrella as the main and one lights the backdrop at very low power.

Got my AB800's and accessories. I've only taken the time to shoot a couple of shots but here's one of my wife both in color and sepia. I do like these so far. Let's see if I can put them through their paces over the next couple of weeks.
EDIT: Added a copy of the photo with some NeatImage applied to it.

The fill is superb, but I would like to see a bit more backlight behind the subjects. |
