...nowhere in there does it say "microstock" aka shutterstock, istockphoto, etc. There are many different kinds of stock photography companies that deal in a wide range of imagery...editorial, reportage, creative, vintage, etc.

True but I think you are going to see most people voting with the microstock mindset. Otherwise it is just a free study, and no matter which type of "stock photo" you decide to do they all have very strict requirements about lighting, focus, and noise and you rarely see black and white photographs in any kind of stock shots.

I think if people realize that "stock" photography can be, and is so much more than the typical microstock fare it's a good thing. Perhaps it isn't total FS territory, but it is a bit more expansive then crispy focused noiseless food shots, etc. I personally have sold B&W images through stock, all automotive, and the below shot is a fairly recent "stock" sale, though not via microstock. If the powers that be wanted this to be a microstock challenge, I'm sure it would have been included in the description?

You are right you can and I have entered shots to stock sites that are not your typical "stock" shots even some black and white. However soft focus or noise would never get accepted on most stock sites. I am just pointing out that most people are going to look at this challenge the microstock way so if you go into it prepared that you might not score as well if you decide to go a different route then whatever you choose to do is fine.

By the way you never mention where you sell your photos. I am curious.

ETA: the shot you gave an example of is actually something I would submit to a stock site as long as it met noise and focus criteria as far as the challenge goes I don't know.

Problem with this challenge is you can't follow the editing rules if you photograph something with a logo, business name, etc.... because you would have to remove it for a stock photo.

Pic of the Eiffel Tower on a semi-clouded day? Stock. Pic of the Pyramids? Stock.
Pic of cows? Live-stock!
Pic of a tree? Wood-stock!
Pic of socks? Stock-ings!

"...if people realize that "stock" photography can be, and IS so much more than the typical microstock fare it's a good thing." " If the powers that be wanted this to be a microstock challenge, I'm sure it would have been included in the description?" Thank you, Rachel. RKT

The emphasis on the "is" in Rachel's quote is mine.
