Wiki- Street photography is photography that features the human condition within public places and does not necessitate the presence of a street or even the urban environment

I am having a very hard time with this one, not living in a bustling place like CA, Chicago or NY where there are always bustling walking with tons of ppl around, I am stuck with animals and a plain area where everyone drives and no one hardly walks anywhere.

Would it be DMNC if I take just pics of buildings or do ppl actually have to be involved?

Generally people should be included i'd say. I understand the difficulty though as i also live in quite a sparse, underpopulated rural area and it can be hard to photograph this sort of thing these days.

Dang it..

I really am kicking myself in the booty right now because we had our famous traditional St. Pattys day parade and street parties all weekend. plus others thinks its a mardigra thing too, Ppl really go all out dressing up for this and really creating a spectacle of themselves, you think its another Halloween because its just one of those "fun things" But most of all I think it was all because of the green beer..

Doing outside spring home improvements was a bit more important than going out shooting LOL, a huge loss.

I really missed out on that opportunity to take some fun images..

*kick kick some more*

Yea, a street parade would be perfect. Mind you, when i say that generally people should be included i only mean in a way to appease the definition and the DNMC voters and commentators. Nothing wrong with breaking away from that and doing something that, whilst is bound to get low scores, is something you've enjoyed doing and enjoyed squeezing into the definition of 'street photography'. If all you've got are animals then go for it i say. Is a shadow of a person part of the person? Why not i say.

I live in probably what is the one of the most unpopulated places in France, I have to travel quite far to anywhere that has people and I mostly shoot in towns with a population from 100 to no more than 5000. Street shooting always feels easier when I'm on holiday and places are bigger.

Good question. And, what about sculptures or statues?

I wrote an essay on street photography without people a while back. Probably controversial but it might stimulate an idea for those wondering what to shoot.

Street Photography Without People

Hope this helps but I can't speak for the DPC voters.

I totally enjoyed that, both the photos and your script. Thanks!

That artical was great thank you!

So yes, that would make a great challenge, but what about the current one

I have tons of stuff like that here I could possibly do, but I am not in the mood for another sub 4 score, wanted to know the concenses if something without people will be sufficient in this or not LOL!

*added*

I don't care about my scores hardly at all, but knowing my new camera is just around the corner, and being able to use prime lenses for the first time its really hard to be patient hahahah

Score and street photography DO NOT go hand in hand.

Just try to get something candid on the street.

The last street photography challenge I ended up with a 4.8 BUT I recieved one comment and I still use the advice today.
They said "Faces are so much more interesting than backs."
Works for me.

Julie, you don't need hoards of people. As you can see, the majority of John's shots feature one or two people. Find an interesting location in your town, where there are people, and you can hang out for a bit, and wait for the moment.

The great thing about street photography is there are no rules.

Do I need to be getting consents or permission of the ppl I do shoot?
03/16/2015 11:31:10 AM · #23
Regarding the idea of street shots at parades, I have found that standing in the back provides some interesting oppotunities for street shots of the other spectators.

only if you are going to sell the shots, then you need a model release. The law says that in a public location where there is no expectation of privacy, it is ok. There are some circumstances where I will take a photo and then go ask the person if it is ok, offering to delete it if they are uncomfortable with it.

Good question!

Go with your gut. If you go with eye contact, and you're hesitant, ask. If the answer is "No." RESPECT THAT!

Most "regular" people by and large are okay with it......the ones who tend to be more "interesting".....homeless, street performers, men/women performing a job, sometimes not so much.

It's nice to get candids for your best effect (See Mr. Jagar's work), but you can see from the expressions that quite a few of his subjects are perfectly okay with his shooting them.

Go to your nearest urban bustle at rush hour, and just stake out a good spot to sit and watch. Don't force the shot........just watch the rythym of the ebb and flow and see what happens.
