This long, but sweet story has a photographic ending.

That's very nice :-) We have a lot of crows here, though we've tried to discourage them from hanging around as they tend to run off the smaller birds from the feeders.

In the winter, I actually make it a point to feed the crows - at a location slightly apart from the other area where I put out food for the cardinals, chickadees, ground sparrows, etc. And, having their own "table" seems to keep the crows away from the other birds. They like meat scraps (raw and cooked) and bread smeared with any kind of fat - bacon grease is a big hit, goose grease is a favorite, peanut butter is okay when the other two fats are not available. Come spring, they actually stop coming by for food and do not appear again until late fall.

Now, I will confess, the meat odor does attract other critters - 'possums, skunks, coyotes and the neighbor's cursed cats! But, overall, because it is a rural area, the presence of the critters doesn't present a serious problem.

The biggest threat to all the little birdies this winter has been a juvenile red-tailed hawk that strafes the heated waterers all too frequently.

Anyway - very sweet story, Ms. Steele. Thanks for sharing.
