With the growing attention to concerns about the impact of anti-vaxxers ill-advised decision to not vaccinate their children, this is a POWERFUL and poigniant article. PLEASE take the time to read this and share it.

Drive that point home.

Seriously nailed it. People are so afraid of handling a burden that they put their kids and others at risk of illness and death.

I stumbled upon this article today. The author does not mention vaccines, but...

When my perfectly healthy son had his 15 month vaccinations within a 24 hour period his life changed forever an so did mine. He lost all his speech, he forgot how to take a bottle, he became hyper-sensitive to textures and most foods and he didn't even know I was his mom. It took three years of extensive therapy and laser treatments to get my boy back. It was coincidentally on mother's day when he was four that he actually said "mom" again. Best day ever! He will never have another vaccination while he's under my care.

I'm sorry for your situation, but I think you need to remember that your son's severe adverse reaction to a vaccine occurs in about one in two million cases, while the mortality rate for measles is about one in two thousand. So your son (or any child) is a thousand times more likely to die from measles than to experience a severe adverse reaction to the vaccine.

The odds of winning a lottery are infinitesimal yet people play.

When takes into consideration the studies, statistics, medical journals and a host of other bona fide reports that have been generated on the subject matter, it is mind numbing to think that some are so anti-vaccine.

Yes terrible things happen, but notwithstanding the number of statistics about vehicular accidents, I still bought my daughter a car.

Surely no one would suggest that I am a bad parent for doing that. Oh, and I did get her vaccinated as a child.

i couldn't help but send the link from Mike around to friends, copied into an email. We all enjoyed it.

As for vaccination - you're a freakin moron if you don't, barring a doctor advising against it due to allergy issues, the way some had problems with the h1n1 vaccination a few years ago.

you put so much time and effort into protecting your kids, why you wouldn't do this is beyond me; and as a rational person I will state that I would very likely become a "beyond rational response" news-worthy person if some anti-vaxxer ended up responsible for something happening to my kid because they don't believe in vaccinating Their kid.

reacting to a known is far different than reacting to an unknown. if your child had a reaction to a vaccination, its very rational and probably wise not to want to administer another but for other parents to fear this response when it is extremely unlikely compared with the alternative, is foolish.

i guess the problem is there was no threat of catching these diseases before since nearly everyone is and was vaccinated for them so the odds of an adverse reaction was lower than actually catching the disease in their minds. now that these diseases are making a comeback, I bet you will see an about face of the anti-vaxxers.
