We often have an expected score in mind when submitting images to challenges here. Enter an image, but title the image with the score you expect to receive. Voters should comment if they disagree with the photographer's guess |

Interesting idea. I actually did guess my score on a recent entry in my description - and will feel a perfect fool when the challenge is over :( . |

With a twist, the blue ribbon goes to the person who guesses closest! |

I'd love if that could work! :-) Any SC folk wanna contact Langdon? |

I would suggest putting the guess in the photographer's comments, so the voters don't know it.
The challenge should have two rankings, one based on the score, and another based on the closest guess.

I thought that too. But I reckoned that people might change it. Also, voters seeing the photographer's guess might inspire commenting, which is the main point of the challenge. It's a free study with a twist. |

Awesome! It was accepted.
Hope people get into the commenting on this challenge! It might be a healthy way for different photography styles on the site to communicate their interests. |

This will be an interesting exercise.
Too bad the person who comes closest to guessing their own score won't be the blue ribbon! Or will they? |

I'm hoping that at least it might be possible to make some special ribbons for the best guessers. |

Had I seen this earlier then I would have suggested that the guess should have been in the comment and not in the title, thus avoiding trolls who will purposefully score otherwise.

The problem I anticipate having is whether to guess what I think it should get (i.e. my score) or what the scores of the DPC masses will average-out to ... one is analyzing the quality of the photo (my opinion -- that's easy), the other guessing at how others will rate it. |

I tried suggesting it, but with no effect.

damjanev suggested similar earlier, and I explained my position then too. The design of this challenge, and it was written that way intentionally, was to encouraged "trolls" and "anti-trolls" to explain their vote with reference yo your expectations.
That cannot be done if we can't see the score.

I responded and you didn't counter. I presumed you changed your mind. |

Trolls taking time to comment!! LOL Good one.
To be clear, I have no issue with the challenge in theory just like I have no issue with anything that goes on here concerning voting... in theory.
Practice is a whole 'nother ball of wax, and it certainly is far from perfect. But this will prove interesting regardless. Or not.

If you predict 5.5000 you will minimize the effect any "troll" vote can have. If you also enter a picture worthy of a 5.5000 you will maximize the effect of the honest voters. |

I was thinking the same thing. I wonder how voters viewing your guess will affect their vote. Would an image with a title of 7 would get the same score as it would if its title was 4? |

Maybe titles should be in the form...
Deserves 7.7, Expect 4.5

In that case I'm going for Deserves: 10 / Expect: 1 :-) |

It should be an interesting challenge if people were playing for the sake of the game instead of some obscure "scheming".
I believe that some people that score normally high will purposefully lower their expectation so they will be able to be contradicted and some will higher their expectations for the fun that it will create. It would be easier for the 5 plus scorers like me. How wrong can I go?
Coincidentally, what is a TROLL here? One that consistently gives lower score? One that takes revenge on what he/she got?
Since I almost always get at least one mark of 1 and a sprinkle of 2s and 3s I normally think that the people who marked me so low really disliked the image and did not care to leave a critique.
This is not to open the same old topic but for me, a regular receiver of 5s and one that seldom marks with a 4 or a 10 for that matter (in which case I specify it) the notion of troll is a bit vague.
Let's hope for a fun game with interesting, unusual or inventive photographs. |
