Okay......here's what popped into my teeny little brain.

I offered up a D40 I had that the autofocus was broken in, and stated that I was looking for a good home for it. I had two people respond, and off it went.

It went to someone who will use it in the photography classes he works with teaching kids photography. More on that....

The other person who responded has a friend with a daughter who was looking to get a start with a DSLR. The broken D40 didn't really suit my description of a starter unit, so I took a D50 I had, with a 28-100 AF-S, charger, spare battery, and memory card to send to him........with the caveat that if it doesn't work out, send it to the other DPCer for his kids' class.

Well, this sparked some back and forth.....I mentioned that I had a hard time finding a card for the D50, and the donee said I didn't have to buy the card......I did to get the camera to work, it was already bought, and besides, he didn't even know about the D50 when I offered it up after sending out the D40.

So......I get the good warm, pay-it-forward feeling from sending out a "kit" to get someone started, AND for helping the kids in a class. I sent along an old lens I didn't use, and another camera body hoping it can be repaired cheap.

I challenge you all to root through your old stuff and find a class, someone who is looking to get started, or just someone that maybe would like something you have that's just collecting dust anyway.

Happy holidays!

Been there, done that.... just a couple of weeks ago.
I kept seeing phone camera photos of my colleague's kids. Lovely looking family, AWFUL photos.

I managed to gently ask if she was interested in learning a bit about this. She said she was, but didn't have a real camera, only her phone.

So I gave her our old Canon Powershot G10 (or was it a 12? .... forgot, no matter) - more of a brick than her phone, but still a VERY nice camera. I also typed up a couple of pages of hints, and she is looking forward to using the Xmas break to work on her photography.

I am hopeful that her kids will now have at least a few decent photos of themselves to enjoy in the future.
