My wife and I are planning the following trip in October this year:
Start - Dallas, Texas
Shiprock, New Mexico (Northern Navajo Fair)
Page, Arizona (Antelope Canyon)
Bryce Canyon, Utah
Grand Canyon, Arizona
Can anyone tell us what it is like to drive through the Navajo Reservations in New Mexico and Arizona?
The software program lists the following roads from Shiprock to Page Arizona: 64 and 160.
We are not sure if they are highways or what the road conditions are?
We plan on taking this information to AAA and have them draw up a better trip tik and see what advice they have for us. I just wanted to check and see what DPC members could offer for help.
Thanks in advance :)

I used to live in Utah and have been to Page several times. Depending on what time in October you may get some snow. Most of the time, in October the snowfall is light in comparison to if you were going in December or January. If you do happen to get some snow it makes for some pretty pictures with the vibrant red rock capped with snow. Also coming up through Page, into Utah there is the Glen Canyon Dam. The reservations that I remember seeing near Page, Arizona (I wish I could remember names) were not that great in appearance. Most of your trip sounds like state routes, until you get to Page then from there into Utah it's highway.
Anyways hope this helps you,

One question we had was the road conditions from Shiprock, New Mexico to Page, Arizona through the Navajo Reservations.
The listed highways are 64 and 160.
Does anyone know what the road conditions are?
What services are available along this route?

Thanks for the great info :)
The snow we won't mind so much. We lived in Upstate NY (Adirondack area) for a great number of years and don't mind it that much. The worst we ever experienced was the "Blizzard of 77".
We have never drove through an Indian reservation so we do not know what to expect fro services along the highway? The software program shows nothing along the trip through the reservation :) It shows small towns and etc and that is about it.

64/160 is one road, after you leave Shiprock with a full tank of gas your next real facilities are in Kayenta ; gas, groceries, fastfood & Monument Valley is about 6 miles north 0n the 163. Oh yeah , make sure you stop @ church Rock just before Kayenta to take some pictures , anywhere is good to pull off & shoot ,the whole area is beautiful.Monument Valley is worth a day in itself. If your next destination is Page then continue back on 160 & take 98 north to Page.Weather shouldn't be a concern in Oct. but a good rule is to keep your tank full & carry water & blankets just in case , it's quite desolate out there .one other recommendation I'd suggest is to make hotel reservations pretty soon , October is a strong month for tourism through the whole area .ENJOY!!!!! |
