Please rate this photograph "Good" or "Bad"
It was taken in an Old People's Home. The woman in the foreground is the owner of the home. The man is a resident.

Thanks

I left a comment on your photo:

Taking into account only the timing, composition and story, I would rate this photo very high.

Adding to this the technical aspects of the photograph, I would have to give this a much lower rating in my books as the low quality overshadows the pleasing aspects of the photograph.

This is a great capture, however, and I would love to see more of your candid shots (if you have any)...

Thanks Mike....Just the kind of intelligent response that I was looking for. The quality is "deliberate" but I take your comment in the spirit intended.

I thought so, do you have the original that you could post, or any outtakes? I really think this is a great moment you've captured.

I've been getting into candid/street photography over the last week or so and enjoy good examples of this work (such as the one you posted).

I'll hold my hands up.

I'm on somethinng of a quest to find out where we stand nowadays on the question of image quality vs. emotional or artistic quality.

At what point does a technically poor image become a bad photograph? Am I alone in thinking that the modern fascination with the "perfect" image has rather lost sight the real point?

I'd much rather have the "eye" than the "optics"

I'm probably just too old for modern tastes.

I'll take a swing..

I think that if the emotional content of an image is strong enough, the quality can be terrible and not effect the overall value of the photo.

I groan out loud when I read posts on this site, and others, of people complaining that the noise on their dSLR at ISO1600 makes the images unusable. Give them some ISO 1600 film for a day and see how they like grain/noise. I suspect many of them have not used a rangefinder, or film SLR with high speed film to appreciate how amazing their Digital doo-dads really are.

I have a number of photos taken with my G5 in ISO200 and 400 that are terribly noisy, but are printed 8x10 and framed on the wall here at home because they hold value for me.

Particularly for 'street' or candid work high ISO grain/noise in a B&W image seems to lend the image more emotion.

And to answer your question.. Yes&No. I think some people may have lost sight of the point of photography as an art, but as a method of recording their environment they are correct to complain about the minor imperfections of their Digital kit.

Many users of digital cameras (Ducking the stones now) are not artists, they simply record their environment in noise free, highly saturated technicolour. Indeed I'm guilty of that a great deal of the time, but I think I can recognise a good photo, and that dosn't mean it has to be noise free, in brilliant colour, or in focus for that matter. It has to tell a story, convey an emotion, strike a chord with the viewer.

Some of the most famous photos of all time are terrible from a technical point of view, and not because the photographers didn't have good gear necesarily. More often than not it's because they picked up and shot the photo without a thought for the settings, they just knew they needed to capture what was happening around them.

As always, just my 2c worth.
