Hey guys and gals... It has been a while but i didn't know anyone else bright enough to trust about this than you guys. :)
I am looking to get a gopro for my everyday video capturing... Fishing, hiking, sports, etc... Which of the gopros should i get? I mean is it really worth the money for the top one?
By the way... I might finally unpack the box with my camera in it soon due to the fact that i am finally moved into my new apartment and into my new job. Getting comfy with where im at in life which means more time for camera stuff.. You all might be seeing me more again.. Don't know if that's a good thing or not yet... But yeah! Lol. |

I hope some people answer this, because I'm interested in getting one too. I thought the Hero3+ Black and almost did the deal but now they have 4, so presumably improvements? or do I wait for 4+ ?

To me, the new one for $129 seems like an outstanding value - I would start there, and if you discover the limitations and your projects require the higher-end ones (seems like mainly you get wi-fi control and viewing and higher resolution), get that one and be able to make two-camera videos where you cut between two different angles.
I've wanted one for a while, but whenever I record video footage it just sits on my hard drive because I have no clue where to begin. I even bought a book about making video but didn't make it past chapter 1, it's just intimidating to me.
I bought a Kodak brand mini-camera right before the first GoPro came out and I hate that useless thing. I mean, the video quality is decent but the battery life is pitiful and the angle of view is like 40mm in 35mm equivalent. I keep it in a drawer somewhere.

Whichever one you buy, a new model will top it in a few months :-). The 4 seems like a leap forward but I'd wait a while for some relevant user input, especially about stability and battery life. I have the 3 black and battery is probably the only drawback. Used it for skiing, snorkeling and random filming around, mainly in 1080, good enough quality for me.
Generally, I think 3+ and 4 are quite future proof.
Edit: good point MadMan2k about gigabytes of videos sitting on the hard drive :-).

I have a few GoPros, going back to one of the first models several years back. Personally, I think you'd be perfectly happy with the Hero 3+ Black, as opposed to jumping in (with an extra bunch of cash) for the brand new 4.
The main advantage of the Hero 4 is that it offers 30fps for 4K video (you can do 15fps 4K on the 3+). I'm not sure how many people really use 4K that much yet... I know it's hard enough to get my computer to handle stuff I do with 1080p.
Another issue is the simple fact that virtually every new GoPro seems to come out with its own new set of bugs. I've been an early adopter with those folks, and it seems that every brand new release winds up with some kind of weird problem. For example, one of mine doesn't focus super well on one side (a known issue)... another one has an issue where the wifi will turn on kind of randomly, and can only be turned off by removing the battery.
If you buy one, I recommend doing it at a place like REI, where they have a tremendously generous return policy, just in case you realize you have some kind of an issue down the road. I didn't realize the focus problems until I began using it on a quadcopter.
Speaking of the quadcopter, that has been a really fun use of the GoPro... here's an example of a video I did of our community:

Why settle for a GoPro when you get an Olympus Tough TG-3?
I've been considering this camera for awhile and I think that it is better than a GoPro.
Whatcha think about this camera instead? |

Haha. Although a quadcopter sounds fun... I doubt i would use it all that much. Im also going to use the gopro for little vlogs here and there like "a day in the life of marko" type videos. I may post them here when i end up doing that if im not completely embarrassed by the lack of creativity with it. Lol.
Being that i am in sales, it seems like the busy season is coming so i may be able to get it sooner than later. Which is good. :) |

The Oly "Tough" series is good stuff! The only issue in comparison to the GoPro is that the Oly needs an additional waterproof housing to go deeper than 50 feet (15m)... the GoPros are rated to 131 feet (40m) out of the box. If you aren't using the camera for scuba diving, this probably doesn't matter. I don't think I've ever hit 50 feet snorkeling... though I'm sure I've hit 30!
