Well, last night was the first time I have shot with the 20D and I must say that I'm in love!

Wanted to get you guys thoughts on these soccer portraits I took last night. Some of the poses are awkward because we didn't have much time to position and reposition because we were loosing light fast. I'm going to be shooting these girls throughout their season so there will be many more opportunities to capture some great moments. These girls love to strike a pose. :o) This was my first time doing a formal type shoot like this and it was much fun.

Anyway, which ones do you like. Which ones do you really no like? Any other ideas for creative poses for shoots such as this one? Any tips to make these particular poses better? Etc, etc, etc... If others do work like this I would like to see some of your favorite shots and poses.

Here is what I think so far:
- Avoid straight on shots. Make the subject turn slightly to one side or the other.
- For soccer, don't have anyone other than the Goalie with their hand(s) on the ball.
- More attention to the pose prior to snapping the picture. The sloppy poses here are pretty much due to lack of time because of fading light. I pretty much let them pose however they wanted, as you can see the one girl wanted to spin the ball on her finger. She was really cute though.

Thanks much!!!

There were a one where the sun was a bit too straight on into the face that made the features look a bit flat, (2) and also has a tendency to make them squint the eyes a bit. (3) #8 the ball hides the childs face, and is an awkard way to hold a ball. (Though he does appear to be having fun.)

Bottom row left is good, even if not a goalie. Is a natural way to hold a ball, and most folks wouldn't care.

All in all some very nice photos.

Thanks for the comments! It's funny you mention the 8th photo. That's the one where she said, "Can you get me spinning the ball on my finger?". I was afraid she would be disappointed if I left it off of the page and she didn't see it if she look at them. :o)

I agree about having them look into the sun and it was bugging me. Unfortunately, the sun was so low in the sky that if I didn't have them face almost directly into the sun, half of their body would have been a complete shadow. I tried my 420EX for fill flash but it didn't work out to well. I think because of the extreme sun conditions.

Thanks again for commenting! I appreciate you taking the time!
