Thank you for the advice, and that is something I would like to do given the opportunity. Not really in the budget right now, and even time will again be in short supply when baby #2 arrives.

I don't pretend to be an expert when I provide comments, and I'm not a very good writer so I might not be conveying the fact that what I'm sharing is just my opinion.
Just because someone comments that they don't like something about your photo, that shouldn't diminish your view of the same photo as your own creation - if the comment makes you take a look at it again and you disagree with the comment, great. You've reinforced one of your creative decisions and continuining to make that decision will probably result in development of a style, something I've never managed to do.

I will say what I like or don't like in a comment, just as many others have done and continue to do. I might like something that breaks a 'rule' of composition and dislike something that follows all of them, or vice versa...

Ignore him. Do as you want. And keep doing it.

A few years ago at DPC, robo-commenting was encouraged. People were given digital ribbons for commenting on 100% of a challenge. The quantity of comments was okay, but the quality slipped badly. I'm accustomed to people not liking my photos. However, there were some comments made which were wrong-headed and simply represented bad photography. Yet, at the time, it was forbidden to PM a member and offer feedback on their comments. Good luck!

anybody NOT voting on this is missing out on some truly amazing experiences.
I have rated 151 of 151 images (100%) in this challenge.
I have commented on 17 images (11%) in this challenge.
I have given an average score of 6.7219.
I have given 4 images a favorite.
I have given 1 image a DPCPrint wishlist mark. (in my opinion, this image deserves a large scale print to be hung in a gallery with a bench in front of it so that people can take their time soaking in the image)

Those were some very frustrating times, sadly they were coming to a head around the time i joined the site (at least one iteration of that cycle was), and it made for an unpleasant experience to what is one of the only decent "learning" photography sites out there that doesn't rely on massive publicity spam tactics to get views to your work.
I commend anybody who can put in the time to come up with an honest comment on every entry, i've tried and sometimes i felt like i was a robo-commenter myself, with many copy/pasting of "i like the composition of this image" or (to paraphrase) "i don't see the artistic merit of this because i'm not worldly enough to appreciate many of the subtleties that differentiate good art from bad photography"

Ryan you left a long and beautiful comment on my shot and I thank you for taking the time to analyze it so thoroughly. And it's not the first time that I notice your thoughtful comments. Thank you.

Gave out a number of 8's and 9's on this one, even a couple 10's, and there are quite a few I'm hoping to see descriptions of when I look back through at the end.

While taking classes in anything is always a good thing, particularly the old school way when you got to get together with real human beings (!), commenting here can be a good learning experience, too. If you think a comment misses something, start a respectful thread, either in a forum or by private message, and maybe both parties will have the opportunity to expand their knowledge. Others, too, if in a forum and kept to friendly exchange of ideas.

I am one of those who comments more in the free spirit mode, meaning often whether I like a photo or not, than from a technical aspect. I think all forms of feedback have value, both to the giver and the receiver. You also have the right to read and release... If the comment doesn't match your perception, let it go... :)

Madman2k I look forward to your comments please keep them coming.
Commenting is your opinion you can't be wrong.
While taking a class sounds great some of the most creative ideas come from out of the box. Take a few laps around the outside of the box before you decide to jump in. You may surprise yourself.

This is why I seldom comment.

I appreciate every comment I receive. You do not need to be an "expert" or even knowledgeable to have an opinion, and any feedback can be helpful.

Have lost much ground in the past 20 hours. Seems like a lot of people are quite sure which image is mine and I'm getting hammered by "expert" opinions. Seems like I did everything wrong.

Hahn sometimes you have some valid points when disagreeing with someone but this remark is completely rude and out of line. Just because an image is compositional correct, accurately follows the rules of thirds, or whatever "technique" you want to claim, doesn't mean it will be appealing to everyone's eye.

I hope no one is deliberately down voting or leaving comments on what they think is hahn23's image. I don't know which one it is, nor does it matter.

For what it's worth, I didn't take offense to his suggestion and I certainly do have a lot to learn. I'm in the military, about all we get is negative feedback so I'm used to it and frankly I'd much rather have several negative comments on each my entries than one positive comment; if they each suggest something to improve or note something in particular they don't like.

I'm glad to hear that my comments on people's entries may have suggested or provoked thoughts related to improvement or style development, and thanks for the words of encouragement.

Just a friendly SC Overlord reminder for everyone to stick to discussing images and not photographers.

Thank you.

Play nice.

Carry on.
