Anybody scoring lower or might I take home brown #2 with this one?
My line of reasoning for the concept and execution of mine went something like this:
During the week of the challenge, did I have time to find a dramatic, cool place and shoot something architectural with cool lines and tones and shadows? No, not without neglecting other things. Could I create shadows by shooting something in a controlled environment? Yep. Does a shadow have to be solid black? Nope. Would the challenge be filled with awesome photos I couldn't hope to compete with? Yep. Should I shoot something that casts an unusual shadow? Yep.
I think a silhouette is part of a shadow, but most of the silhouette photos I saw in this challenge also included the shadow being cast from the subject in silhouette, so in my mind they met the challenge and I voted based on the visual appeal, technical details and how interesting the photo was overall.
Now on some of them, I didn't feel the shadows were being presented as a main focal point of the photo. I still gave most of those a 5 or higher though.

I'd be amazed if 4.7 took the brown, actually. You can always hope, though... |

Geesh! There's an awful lot of "conversation" about what is and what isn't in here. What happened to the old "don't try to sway the voters in the forums", eh?
No worries ManMan, I got you covered. :-D

Moving up, and I've gotten some good comments, but it's not likely to get above 6. |

No problem. I self dq'd my challenge entry. It was my mistake to enter an image that contained interesting shadows. According to several fine comments from highly accomplished photographers, my image did not have the classification of shadows they were looking for. And, I certainly have to admit my interpretation of shadows was quite different from theirs. The deep low votes were absolutely justified based on their definition of this challenge. From the comments, I have learned that my image actually did not contain any shadows at all I stand in awe of their ability to narrow down a challenge definition to a highly specific type of popular image. It is, after all, what DPC is all about. |

Richard,
I hope you don't let it get you down - I mean, you have an image that scored over 8 and several other ribbons over 7 so you know better than many what kind of photos get high votes, and it can't hurt to experiment. I think I know which one was yours - yes, my comment said something along the lines that I didn't grasp the shadow theme. Had it been entered in a challenge topic that was a clear fit to the photo I probably would have given it an 8, as it was I think I gave it a 6 or might have been 5, can't remember.
I think some people follow a formula that assigns points based on various criteria that would give a maximum of 10 - I don't break it down that much but I look at every photo for as long as it takes to come up with a comment I feel is at least a little helpful, and if during that time I can't connect it to the theme of the challenge I take off a point or 2 from what I would give it in a free study. If I think the connection to the challenge topic is very clever and inspiring, I add a point or 2 from what I would have given it in a free study.
There was a photo in the skyscape challenge I would have given an 8 or 9 in a free study, but given how it connected to the challenge I gave it a 10.
Who's up for trying to beat the lowest scoring image ever in a race to the bottom?

Yes, I completely understand and appreciate your comments. After all, the challenge title and challenge description gave license to all to be very, very specific and exclusionary about what constitutes a proper shadow. |

Mine has a couple of obvious shadows, but the photo itself ain't much to look at, so it's scoring pretty low if that's any consolation.

Down to a matter of hours, maybe I'll get my first 0-comment entry with this one. |

I think, more to the point, the challenge tasked photographers with coming up with their best photo OF shadows. I don't think it's unreasonable for the voters to favor images where the shadow is the SUBJECT of the photo. After all, if that weren't the case, the challenge would be a Free Study, since it's virtually impossible to do a shadowless image in the normal run of things. |

I've never read so much discussion about a challenge topic during the voting of the challenge before...
One thing remains the same though my score has dropped a whole lot today. It must be turnover Tuesday!!! |

Good. I'm sure it said this in the challenge description. |
