Does anyone have experience with the 1.5kg AF-S VR 70-200 F2.8 lens on a Nikon D70 body? I know that is a great performer optically, AF and VR etc. I know it is not always fun to lug around with a total of 2+kg.

My question is more like: How does the weight affect the body? Can you let it hang on the body when the whole set hangs on your shoulder or do you need to support the lens at all times?

When I have my Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS on my Rebel I hold the whole thing by the lens letting the camera hang on the lens. With the Mark II since the weights are more balanced and the Mark II is solid metal I let the lens hang on the camera.

the lense mount on the d70 is metal, you can let the 70-200 hang off of it... at least, if you're hanging this on your shoulder or something, you shouldnt' have any problems at all. if you're holding just the camera body and letting the weight of the lense pull perpendicularly to the body, then i'd be more concerned, at least check the screws on the lense mount regularly to make sure all is still tight.
but if you're worried about carrying that lense around on the body and it cracking the body or something, i wouldn't worry about that.

Thanks for your replies. I'm thinking more and more about getting a D70. :)

azrifel,
i have my old 602z as well, that's what i was using before i went to the d70. the interface is similar... if you're comfortable with the 602, moving to the d70 will be pretty natural. if you use a d70 for a little while then go back to the s602 you're gonna wonder how you lived without an SLR. i thought that fuji was pretty fast... i knew the d70 would be faster, but i really had no idea how much better it performed.

go try one out if you can. I think you would really like it. for the money it's definitely the best camera out there as an entry-level dSLR now.
