Originally posted by Mike: you found an article on the internet where a model is shocked, shocked! that someone would photoshop away her flaws, the horror! last time i checked, models are selected based on their appearance. |
What you seemed to have missed is that they did not eliminate a flaw, the model is in great shape. What they did was to make her body look like something that does not, can not exist in this world because even females have intestines and various essential organs in their midsection that they need to have there to continue living. The fact that you see a woman in great shape as needing to be "fixed" means you share an unnatural opinion of what a female ought to look like, which is unhealthy, but not as dangerous as when a 12 year old girl buys into the same lie. Then it gets very dangerous indeed.
It is not a question of "being in shape."
Here is a link to Howard Schatz’s Athlete series. Here we see the various bodies of the worlds most elite athletes yet none of them even come close to looking like they could skip the photoshop phase of a modeling job, because the body being sold to us as ideal, does not exist. |

This is pretty much just what I was going to write in my next response. Well said!

focusing on this image in particular, i still don't see the problem, the finished image looks natural to me, they didn't make her that much thinner, in fact the pose actually looks better. so what if she isn't that thin, who cares, the finished product looks good and that's the point. if you have ever photographed models the poses are very unnatural and sometimes uncomfortable for them so they Photoshopped her into a better pose. when they Photoshopped this underwater image they moved some of the belly but getting the model to suck in her stomach and bend that way would be extremely difficult especially floating in water and holding her breath.
the original image looks unnatural to me and the finished one just has a better overall feel. The retoucher hasn't done anything that i wouldn't not have done to this image.

here problem solved, just a put a disclaimer on every image that it as been retouched.
"professionally retouched image, don't try to look like this at home."

That is actually a pretty clever idea; we have those disclaimers on every car ad (professional driver on a closed course, do not attempt to do this at home) or the even longer disclaimers on medicine ads where they have to warn you about the possible adverse results of the drug being pandered.
Warning: this image has been photoshopped. Do not try to look like this. This body type does not exist in nature. Attempts to make your body look like this through severe dieting and plastic surgery can result in severe physical and psychological harm.
Slap that it the bottom of photoshopped images in the same way that tobacco and alcohol are required to have the little danger warnings. |

I like the part where only attractive people rule. I wonder where you learn an important thing like that.

While they're at it, maybe they should warn people about floating with one's head down at the bottom of the deep end of the pool while one's breath trickles away in tiny little bubbles.

Care of the self, is for me the most important and attractive trait in any person, man or woman. You are probably right in that being attracted to beauty is instinctual, however, what is considered beauty is in the eyes of the beholder and ultimately current prevailing ideals. I believe that contemporary ideals are not achievable to most men and women, hence only possible by faking. I have no problems with you liking to look at women and preferring them to look good. I do the same with men. However, you say you don’t care how they get there. Isn’t the most important thing that it’s real? I’m only curious, because it is to me. Also, I believe you are only half-right in saying that “humans are very superficial creatures”. I think that most people construct presumptions about other people based on appearance. However, most adult, as they get to know the other person, root their impression in additional features. I’m (almost) sure you do too :) |
Attractive people will always rule the world.

Really? Look at people who run the world, for the most part, they are not and never were "attractive". |

You mean like these folk?
runs/ran the world: Richard Nixon, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Angela Merkel
Doesn't/didn't run the world: June Allison, Betty Grable, Clark Gable |

Angela Merkel was a low blow. Her name alone is as ugly as a punch below the belt. Her name needs photoshopping. |

The image is about as realistic as the serving suggestion on a TV dinner package... and for the same reason. Neither is healthy or attainable. |

ok, money rules the world, but you can't admit attractive people don't get favored and special treatment. |

I must say, the photoshopping was a little excessive, but I'm more on Mike's side here. In photography, colours are enhanced, contrast is enhanced, etc. so that the photo looks good. A beautiful sunset in real life is beautiful, but in a photo it needs touching up. The model in the photoshoot is beautiful in real-life, but in a photo, a little touching up enhances the final product. Girls who look at magazines and get depressed weren't brought up with enough self-confidence. I know plenty women who couldn't give a damn what the model looks like - they actually think it's bad, but as a photo, they like it. Same for me - skinny isn't attractive. Well-built and healthy is attractive, and a pretty face is no. 1, but you can't capture that sort of beauty in a photo because a photo is 2D. "Photoshopping" to bring out that natural (real-life) beauty is great. |
