If the blocks exist, even if all white, then selecting and recoloring them is fine in advanced or expert rules.

And I would have thought so as well. But given that this was part of the Team Competition I was advised by my teammates to verify this with the site council. The reply I got back was that even though the blocks were defined already, they are part of an otherwise uniform background and by coloring them I am effectively "creating a new image area". I argued your point exactly, but was told in no uncertain terms that should mine place it would be DQ'd for that reason.

I was also reminded that this was really about "challenging you photography skills, not your post processing skills", and that "ultimately it's up to the voters to decide borderline violations and vote them down", which both makes me laugh and makes me angry as all get-out, because it's their rules we die by when we place, so mine would get DQ'd for selective tinting, but I can make something that's in no way purple, purple and win a challenge with no issues. To be fair, though, Bear has restated just that in this thread, so the council is at least consistent with their unwillingness to be firm on this issue.

The SC's issues with this image and the voter's with another was enough to make me walk away from this place and the Team competition in utter frustration and torment. I'm over it now, and am starting to get a feel for how this place works - or doesn't. I don't like it, but as long as I don't take the voting too seriously I can work within it.

But that doesn't mean I'm not going to fight for improvements and clarifications when I think they're needed. Heck the council already did that twice this summer. Now, if I can only get them to change the "Bad" and "Good" to the far less subjective and (IMHO) requiring less of a definition of what each is "Low" and "High" on the 1-10 voting scale I can calm down a little.

I just can't see how/why that should DQ. You're not making anything that wasn't there already. Disagree with that ruling completely.

And anyone who says this site is about challenging your photography skill, and not your processing skills is naive. The two are as linked as it gets. Otherwise we would just be running Minimal challenges all the time.

Oh, I hear you. And I would have said the same thing had it not been someone on the SC who said it.

To their credit, they suggested I post this image up for discussion when the challenge was over, but by that time I was pissed about something else and ready to walk and wanted to avoid my head totally exploding. Perhaps this is better posted separately now and a discussion actually had? I'll do that.
