It actually has too much contrast for me and too much grain.I think I know what you are going after and I like the direction, but this particular example isn't working for me. Please don't take this wrong -- I would be thrilled to do what you have done. I just know you can do it even better.

I like it. How did you do it? It looks very artistic and I don't agree with Kylie. I would crop off 25% from up and 25% from right, because upper right corner is distracting. As I said I like the technique and I would like to use it for a portrait. |

You've given an almost 3d to the feeling of the photo, the texture of the skin is very 'real' if not slightly sureal. The background is a little distracting though, as the brightest bit of the image are out of focus.
Not sure if I like the effect for this particular image, but I can see it has huge potential. Something about making a babies foot look 'harsh' dosn't quite ring true for me, and the dead-center composition with the bright spot in the top corner is a little difficult.
On a similar style, and sorta related, I've often been in awe of Andrzej Dragan who posts PS'd images to www.photo.net (examples) .
I've messed around and can't even get close, so I know that you've probably put a lot of work into your retouching on this image.. Interesting results, and with a different source image I think it would be great.
As always, I/we appreciate you sharing your work...

:-).
I've spent hours looking at his shots, and his personal website. He describes the technique in such vague terms as to not give any real hints...
I'd not thought of approaching it from a monochrome/duotone point of view as you are though... Have you tried any colour shots?
Looking at the other shot (The old man one) you're certainly getting close to it, all you need now is some really gnarly looking faces to snap shots of, and you're in business :-).
