Why is the brown ribbon so coveted? It's not like an actual brown ribbon gets placed by your photo. I came in dead last in my very first challenge, and even though the picture was admittedly bad, I was kind of bummed out. Stupid grey square, why would anyone WANT to come in last?

Because (some) people desire being noticed, standing out. That means a position on the very end of the rankings -- even the lowest end -- makes one more distinctive than finishing, say, third from last. Then it's just a bad picture, but not even outstandingly bad.

I don't think anyone really likes getting the "Brown," but making it into a fun thing is one way to cope with what could otherwise be a quite bitterly disappointing result. I know it works for me : )

I have an idea...which im sure will cause more "blasting"...To stimulate competition and make everyone try harder, any photo that gets an average vote of less then a 3 should flat out not be shown....This way we can stop these types of intent for the brown ribbon....I for one think its ridiculous that someone would post a grey box and try to get everyone to believe he did it to meet the team sport challenge.

Its a waste of my time and all it does is cause unrest with dpc memebers that pay money for a semi serious venue for their "Real" photos.....How can you keep a member base if you let this sorta behavior run wild?

I'm in favor of the general concept but I think it would just lead some to vote images higher as a hedge against an image possibly not being shown. How about adding a does not meet challenge or zero box reserved for photos that don't meet the challenge and if a significant portion of the voters tick that box then it doesn't get shown?

I thought it was there because of some sort of bug. I tried not to vote on it at all but it kept coming up when I was refining my votes and I finally just gave it a "1" to get rid of it. I thought about giving it a "5" because I didn't want to mess someone's position just 'cos of a bug in DPC.

There is a don't vote button, you just skip the pic and never enter a vote.

No your wrong there if you do it keeps poping up.

That doesn't mean you can't keep skipping it. Yes, it may be annoying to have it keep coming back but there is a solution.

So you want this site to be annoying???
I would hate for this site to become annoying!

I didn't say that. You should be voting on all entries. This is just an acception. How does the system know you want to bypass a particular image indefinately?

All this quoting is annoying...... :P

And you just added to it....:P

How many quotes should be the limit?

I don't know.

My post there wasn't about the entries ... it was about idiots who think a grey square in a challenge about team sports should get a 10. I'd put money on the same idiots voting 1's for the top shots as well.

I gave them highish marks - but they weren't among my favourites. Very clear, very high quality, photo - but really not that special. The only one that really grabbed my attention was actually underexposed from a Rugby game where you could clearly see the expressions on all 3 players involved in the picture.

I seem to be a genius in submitting pictures that doesn´t fit the theme;),
Not that i want it! I´m just misunderstanding it to many times because i thought i knew it and din´t check the forum out. Suffering right in this momment in one of the theme;) I planed the shot for it and all..
But now i´m getting many comments about this not fitting the theme.
I thought something could touch a person in emotion.
I would have liked to get it DQ and i could have had a really good reason for it. My received comments for exampel.
Wouldn´t that be a hard time for the SC because that´s really on the borders?
I think the poor SC has enough work already and it´s not like they are getting paid for it..

However, what I find absolutely hillarious here is all the bullshit about how it is on topic you just need to consider the esoteric allignment of the planets etc etc etc etc *yawn* and these attempts to explain how the photographer was attempting to demonstrate how .....

When even the photographer hasn't pretended it was on topic *laugh*

Know what ... if I was frantically trying to justify why something like this was on topic, coming out with all these wonderful reasons it was so magnificent and then found out from the photographer ... "naw, it was just a joke" I think I'd feel pretty foolish ... though usually that leads people to justify their position even further ... aren;t ego's a fun thing ;)

It reminds me of a TV comedy sketch I saw a while ago with a bunch of ponces at an art gallery, debating the deep significance of the wonderful piece of modern art they were examining, going into the rational behing the artist's thoughts, what had influenced him, the hidden meaning of life contained within it ...... and then the cleaner arrived, took the bucket and mop they had been studying and got on with doing the floor *laugh*
